MASCAREF – Overview (short) Study under EEC 2152/2003 Forest Focus regulation on developing harmonized methods for assessing carbon sequestration in European forests (MASCAREF) Project supported by EC/JRC, Contract No Study under EEC 2152/2003 Forest Focus regulation on developing harmonized Methods for ASsessing CARbon sequestration in European Forests (MASCAREF)

MASCAREF – Overview (short) The project aims Strengthening and harmonizing the existing national systems to better meet the requirements of international monitoring and reporting of GHG emissions and sinks Improving the comparability, transparency and accuracy of the GHG inventory reports of the LULUCF sector of Member States

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Project consortium Partners Sub-contracted Partners

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Project overview Task 1 LULUCF/AFOLU reporting requirements and realities JR Task 2 Use of previous and ongoing monitoring networks BGR Task 3Use of National Forest Inventories SLU Task 4 Analysis of volume to carbon stock conversion/expansion IFER Task 5 Aggregating NFI data at 10x10 km Eurogrid ALTERRA Task 6 Gap filling strategy (case studies in 5 regions/countries) All partners

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Task 1 example: UNFCCC and KP Summary report Summary figures: relationship UNFCCC/KP reporting Non-CO2 e/rCO2 e/r Forest land Finalized

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Task 2 example – use of ICP Forests monitoring Conclusions –Level I offers forest soil C baseline +/- 1990; only top soils, large degree of systematic errors; extensive differences between countries: high uncertainties, which at the same time cannot be quantified accurately –Litter: depends on the interpretation/modification of its definition: fumic/humic layers contain the majority of C in the IPCC-defined litter compartment –Some Level II sites have litter samples: that offers potential to fully assess litter-C; a very small proportion of Level II sites has N2O and CH4 measurements and to link with other GHG; non-representative data base

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Task 3 products Mid-term reports –Use of NFI data for the UNFCCC/KP reporting of emissions and removals of greenhouse gases (Colin, Petersson, Ståhl) –Use of BFs and BEFs in European NFIs (Freudenschuss, Weiss)

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Task 4 example: factors from IPCC(2003) vs. IPCC(2006) Large differences in BEFs for temperate region, good match for boreal region

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Task 5 example: analysis in the Netherlands 1 x 1 km raster over NL random drawing per cell (forest; non-forest) stratified random (0 to 100 sampling points in forest per 10 x 10 km grid) number of sampling points is measure for forest cover 1)aggregation by simple averaging (all points) 2)averaging forest plots * representative area 3)averaging forest plots * forest cover (EFI map) 4)kriging (to do)

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Task 6: test regions (countries) Italy – NFI aggregation Greece – soil networks Lithuania – NFI aggregation Slovakia – exp./conv. factors Romania – NFI implementation

MASCAREF – Overview (short) Work progress 2 years (June 2007 – May 2009) Here we are now
