The environment will become more secure as well. – Canadian police are highly involved in training members of the ANP. They are also teaching those members everything they can

Priority Two: (Basic Services) How is Canada Providing Help? – Canada is spending a lot of money in order to help the Afgan people with their schooling, communication skills, ways of transportation like improving their roads, and making water safer to drink. – They are set on improving Afghanistan’s government. – They want to make sure that the people are confident in their government. What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? – Canada is hoping that Kandahar will soon be able to provide all of the main basic needs of the people. – They want teachers trained, improved farmland, and more seasonal jobs put in place.

Priority Three: (Humanitarian Aid) How is Canada Providing Help? - Canada wants the vulnerable people of Afghanistan to be fed - The homeless people are going to be given blankets, pots and pans, and utensils, since they cannot afford them at this time - They want more health services put in places, and they also want to give out vaccinations What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? -They want to have places where vulnerable people can go at all times -They want people to have mine awareness and they also want children to be able to get vaccinated

Priority Four: (Border) How is Canada Providing Help? – They are making Afghanistan’s border more secure for everyone – 32 million has been put into the training of border officials, and they are contributing to a dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistan – The ability to trade and travel between the two places will be helped along What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? - The border will be better managed - There will be more border officials trained

Priority Five: (National Institutions) How is Canada Providing Help? – When elections happen, Canada is willing to pitch in some money to help the process become a better one – They want technological and financial support for the Independent Elections Commissions – They want select national institutions with technical expertise, training and mentoring, equipment, and program support to help the people of Afghanistan What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011? -They want an increased capacity of democratic governance - They want to put effective budgets in for the military

Part 1A: Signature Projects – Canadian Efforts in Afghanistan Instructions: Use this link Use this link to learn about 3 signature projects that we as the Canadian people have identified as critical for the people of Afghanistan. - Fill in the following slides with information in your own words about these projects.

Signature Project 1 – (Dahla Dam and Irrigation System) Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? -It provides a steady water supply - It gives another place for people to work, and many people are able to work there at one time - Agriculture is improved because the farmers are supplied with irrigated land What is Canada doing to help? – Canada is using its skills to help repair the dam and keep its water flowing smoothly – They help to maintain the dam by cleaning it – Canada is using their skills in agriculture to teach the people of Afghanistan so that they will be able to maintain the dam themselves independently

Signature Project 2 – (Education) Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? -Afghanistan has a very low educational level, and very few children attend school. Canada helping to rebuild the schools and help improve the education given may increase the amount of people that can and want to go to school. - If more teachers are trained to teach there, more people may be able to go to school. Kids will also to be able to learn to read. What is Canada doing to help? – Canada is helping to repair damaged or old schools and training 3000 teachers and providing vocational and literacy training. – They are also helping improve the Ministry of Education so that better education can be provided to the people of Afghanistan

Signature Project 3 – (Polio Eradication) Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan? -People of Afghanistan will have arranged times for immunization - Afghanistan has the highest rate of this disease, so having the vaccinations will help them out a lot - Every child is going to be accounted for, so their risk of getting the disease at such a young age is reduced What is Canada doing to help? -There will be established vaccination points at major boarding crossings - They are going to do their best to strengthen the delivery of health services in and around Afghanistan
