Presentation transcript:

11/23/2010 ©Evergreen Public Schools Hollywood Budgets Teacher Notes Task : Students predict how much the movie The Hobbit will gross in the U.S. Have students work in pairs. Give students the scatterplot with the data. Have students present their predictions. Hopefully half with the zero axis will find the task much more difficult than the half with the 200 axis.

©Evergreen Public Schools Learning Target Everything in this unit. What do you this a linear model is?

©Evergreen Public Schools LaunchLaunch How can models be useful in jobs outside of a math class? You will use a model to predict how much a movie will make (US Gross) when we know the movie’s budget.

©Evergreen Public Schools ExploreExplore

5 Hollywood Budgets Guess which recent movies had large budgets? Let’s find out…

©Evergreen Public Schools Go to the Find a movie that has an Unknown US Gross. Use 9 other movies in the list to predict the US Gross of the movie that you chose. Find a regression equation and use the correlation coefficient, r, to determine if your model was a good one. Be prepared to present to the class.

Go to Click on the MOVIES tab select BUDGETS and FINANCES Then choose the link for a complete list of all movies (this will take you to a page titled MOVIE BUDGETS)

©Evergreen Public Schools Debrief Explain two things you know about how you can use data to make predictions.

©Evergreen Public Schools Learning Target Did you hit the target? Everything in this unit. Rate your understanding of the target from 1 to 5. 5 is a bullseye!
