Controversies Political bias Phone-in scandal Blue Peter cat scandal The Ross/Brand affair The Queen documentary trailer problem

BBC Facing Scandal Over Contests Yesterday, senior BBC executives went before a House of Commons committee to discuss revelations of viewer deception and editorial misconduct, including phone-in trivia competitions in which the BBC encouraged viewers to call in answers — only to award the prize to an employee posing as an enthusiastic contestant. Three of eight bogus competitions uncovered in internal reviews were in support of charity — Comic Relief, Sport Relief and Children in Need — and one, Blue Peter, was a children's show.

BBC scandal dominates the papers Anger over the prank phone messages left for the actor, Andrew Sachs, is vented in the editorials of six papers. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has joined the attack and the Sun says the scandal is now beyond the BBC's control. The Independent says the BBC's apology seemed to reflect more a fear of the press than a proper sense of moral obligation. The Daily Mail says BBC managers, with their metropolitan mindsets, could not see what the fuss was about.
