9 Developing Publishing Standards that Improve Scientific Communication and Access  Co-founder of CrossRef™, founding member of International DOI Foundation, founding member of COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of Networked Resources)  Founding publisher of HINARI and AGORA, UN-based initiatives providing free or low cost access to health, agriculture and related information in developing countries  In 2004 we changed our author posting policy to allow authors to post their accepted manuscripts to their websites and their institution’s repository  Our licences explicitly allow members of the public to have unlimited walk-in access to our online databases and materials subscribed to by a library

10 … continued  We make all articles published in our Cell Press journals openly available on our website 12 months following publication; IJSS followed in 2005 at 24 months  In May 2005 we adjusted our author agreements to test allowing NIH-funded authors to meet NIH’s request that authors’ accepted manuscripts be posted to PubMedCentral within 12 months of final publication  Engage with scientific and academic communities in exploring and shaping innovations that can deliver demonstrable and sustainable benefits  Continue to observe, test, learn and implement based on facts, and based on the developing needs of research communities
