MFL DVD Resource TOPIC: FOOD

Bienvienue chez les Ch’tis A comedy about a postmaster who is transferred from the South of France to the North. Excerpt from the film: 26:00 > 28:57 Philippe wakes up in Antoine’s house after his first night up north. He goes down to the kitchen to enjoy a traditional northern breakfast.

Bienvienue chez les Ch’tis It is fairly clear that the breakfast is not to Philippe’s taste, and the conflict that arises with the mother is not just about food. What else might be going on? How is this suggested in this scene?

Think of the worst breakfast you’ve ever had or the worst breakfast you can think of. Use as many adjectives, intensifiers and comparisons as you want to describe the experience. Prepare a Powerpoint presentation for homework demonstrating your worst breakfast experience (this could include photos of the actual food). Bienvienue chez les Ch’tis

Excerpt from the film: 01:18:59 > 01:21:46 Julie and Philippe eat dinner with his colleagues after her arrival.

Bienvienue chez les Ch’tis Choose one of the characters and describe their physical appearance (write a paragraph describing hair, eyes, height….) Il/Elle aime porter (describe what clothes he/ she likes wearing) Personnalité (describe his/her personality). Il/elle est: irrationnel(le)équilibré(e)perspicace tendre serein(e) hypersensible tourmenté(e) hésitant(e) timide fragileintuitif(ve) réservé(e) résolu(e) ingénieux(se) sentimental(e) passionné(e) audacieux méticuleux(se) souriant(e) responsable enthousiaste déprimé(e) Petits Plaisirs: …aime (write two things that this character might like doing)

Bienvienue chez les Ch’tis Describe what you’re meant to think might be on the menu. Talk about how you felt about the dining experience, imagining you are Julie talking to a friend in the South of France. Think about your description in terms of appearance, smell and taste.

Couscous This film is set amongst the North African community in the Mediterranean port of Sète. Excerpt from the film: 36:04 > 36:35 The family are at dinner.

Couscous Food plays an important role in bringing the family together in this scene and gives us an insight into their culture. Does it resonate with you? What does it make you think? What is the family eating/drinking in the clip? Do you eat any of this sort of food at home? Is there any food from the clip you would (not) like to try? Why (not)? What do you eat/drink for a family meal at home?

Couscous Match up the character with their role in the family (e.g. mother, sister, etc) and their age. Make a list of all the ingredients that go into a typical family meal you have at home. Alternatively, list those that go into your favourite meal. Use either the meal you watched in the clip or one you imagined and describe what it was like to taste each course/dish. Pay particular attention to using the correct vocabulary for the meals you describe and using a range of creative adjectives to describe them.

Joyeux Noël Joyeux Noël is a film about the World War I Christmas truce of December 1914, depicted through the eyes of French, British and German soldiers. Excerpt from the film: 39:50 > 41:56 It’s Christmas eve and the three different trenches are preparing their ‘feast’ as they would at home.

Joyeux Noël The French: what do they do? What do they eat? What do they drink? The Scottish: what do they do? What do they eat? What do they drink? The Germans: what do they do? What do they eat? What do they drink? What symbolic objects of the three cultures do you see? In your opinion, which troops have the most fun? We see signs that say 'Froggyland’ and 'Rosbif land’: can you explain what these might mean?

Joyeux Noël What was there on the menu? Rewrite the menus of the three festive meals using the products (food and drinks) of each nation: For example: Repas de Noël allemand: du boudin, des saucisses, des choucroutes ……. (you continue) The Scottish soldiers sing "I'm dreaming of home." In pairs, write the lyrics of a similar song for the French. Begin: “Je rêve de la maison…” If you learn German, try writing a German version, too.

Le Fils de l’Epicier This is the story of the grocer’s son, Antoine Sforza, who reluctantly returns from the city to take his position as the head of his estranged family in a rural village, as his father has had a stroke. Excerpt from the film: 21:08 > 23:13 Food shopping from the grocer’s van.

Le Fils de l’Epicier Watch without subtitles first. List the foods mentioned in French Try to list a piece of French food and/or drink vocabulary for each letter of the alphabet (or for each colour of the rainbow).

Le Fils de l’Epicier Does anything from this scene surprise you as a shopping experience? How would you feel about this type of food shopping? What are the pros and cons? Where do you and your family buy food from? What are the benefits of supermarkets / markets / local shops?
