Developing a Program Improvement Plan Department for Technical Education Cabinet for Workforce Development Equal Education and Employment Opportunities M/F/D

Introduction This tutorial is designed to assist a teacher in developing a program improvement plan (PIP). This presentation will: Outline the purpose of the program improvement plan (PIP), Give step-by-step instructions on developing the program improvement plan (PIP), and Provide an example of a completed program improvement plan (PIP).

Purpose of the Program Improvement Plan (PIP) Assist the teacher in meeting standard 19 of the program assessment requirements Increase student achievement Improve the quality of the program Communicate program needs to administration Support the school plan Define goals Develop a plan to meet the goals Set priorities

Step-by-Step Instructions on Developing the Program Improvement Plan (PIP)

To Begin: Click here to print a sample copy of a one- year program improvement plan. Click here to print a sample copy of a one- year program improvement plan. After the program improvement plan has completed printing, proceed to the next slide.

Step 1: Consult Resources Present and former students, advisory committee members, business and industry, technical college representatives, high school counselors, principals, and other teachers Budget Curriculum, equipment/inventory lists, advisory committee recommendations, student evaluations, skill standards data, and CATS data ATC school plan and Consolidated School Improvement Plan(s) at feeder school(s) Latest program assessment

Step 2: Identify Program Needs A sample list of possible needs follows on the next two slides.

Step 3: Set Priorities Prioritize needs into a 3-year PIP plan.

Step 4: Complete the PIP As an illustration, we will complete the first-year PIP for an electricity program on the next slides.

Part 1 of the PIP – Equipment and Facility Improvement Questions to ask: How is the equipment tied to the curriculum? What vendors offer this type of equipment? What is the price? Is the equipment on state price contract? How many pieces do you need? Do I have sufficient funding for the purchase? What is the priority? Is additional building maintenance needed to run the equipment?

Part 2 of the PIP: Equipment Repair, Replacement and Update Portion Questions to ask: What piece(s) of equipment need repair, to be replaced, and/or updated? What parts are needed? Who will repair the equipment? Does the budget allow for this expense?

Part 3 of the PIP: Supplies Questions to ask: Were supplies adequate last year? Is enrollment expected to increase, decrease or stay the same for the next school year? Will new equipment require more supplies? Will the same classes and sections of classes be taught next school year?

Part 4 of the PIP: Professional Development/Training Questions to ask: Does the purchase of new equipment require teacher training? When do teacher/program certifications expire? Is training related to instruction needed? Is the training offered at a time when interruptions to student learning are at a minimum?
