Grading (overall): A letter grade will be assigned to each student by the section instructor at the end of the semester and will be based on evaluation of the following course requirements: (25%) Delivery of at least three presentations on achievements and timely progress (15%) Class and seminar/guest speaker attendance, quizzes, and assignments (45%) End-of-semester report and accomplishments (15%) Individual performance evaluation ME 195A Syllabus (2009/2010) (Available at MAE Department Web Site) Prerequisites: ME 114, ME 154 Co-requisite:ME 120 Credit Units:3 units, 9 hours laboratory Class hours:Wednesdays, 15:00 – 17:45 (but expect to commit at least 10 hrs/week to your project!) DESIGN PROJECTS Generally there are three (3) types of projects for ME 195

Type 1: Industry sponsored projects - Initiated either through Department administrators or MAE faculty members, (or by students) - Evidence of education values - SJSU faculty supervisor’s approval is necessary - Normally with financial support by the sponsor - Industry provides mentoring and technical support as required - Industry specifies its needs. SJSU faculty supervises the design project

Type 2: Department sponsored projects: - Relates to the development and building of laboratory equipment or facility for the MAE department (Example: steam turbine in Room 113 and HVAC experimental station in Room 114, etc.) - Prior approval by the faculty supervisor and the Department Chair is necessary - Department provides full or partial financial support

Type 3: Projects of mutual interest of faculty supervisor and the students: ● Evidence of educational value ●Must be approved by the faculty supervisor ● Special projects involving large number of students: (vehicle projects e.g. HPV, Mini Baja, SAE Formula car, etc.) ● Because of time and resource constraints, there will be limited to one or two vehicle projects intended for State or national competitions supervised by Professor Agarwal ● Mini Baja or SAE Formula car project ● Human powered vehicle project

ESTABLISHING DESIGN PROJECTS AND FORM DESIGN TEAMS

Step 1: Students are to meet with faculty supervisor of the section to which they have interest in the projects offered by that instructor after this General Session ● In order to maintain quality learning, equitable enrollments in each of the 4 sections of ME 195A is desirable ● Students are not guaranteed to be admitted to the section of their first choice Step 2: Discuss their interested projects with faculty supervisors for more detailed information in the subsequent individual sessions

Step 3: Form the design team (refer to Section II of Course Manual) and agree on the design project with the Faculty Supervisor Teams normally consist of 2 to 4 students, with one student designated as Team Manager Step 4: Develop the Project Proposal (refer to P. 1-3 of Course Manual for the format) on the agreed project Step 5: Submit the Project Proposal to the faculty supervisor within the first week of the semester for his or her approval ● All students in ME 195A must have their Project Proposals approved by respective section faculty supervisors by the end of the second week into the semester

● Once the student has settled with a project and the course section, the student must make appropriate adjustments in drop/add in the sections that he or she has previously enrolled ● Students will face the consequences for not earning the credits for failing to do so Special Notes: ● Act professionally at all times: ● Be punctual to all meetings ● Must attend all scheduled sessions – general and individual sessions ● Must attend all oral presentations and offer constructive comments and suggestions ● Grading of individual members will be based on their performance, contribution to the project, and their professional conduct ● Not all members of the same team would receive same grades
