DRUG ABUSE III Drug abuse is the use of drug without regards for the prescription of a medical practitioner. When a drug is used for a purpose other than what it is meant for, or when it is used for its rightful purpose but not according to the prescription of medical personnel, it is called “Drug Abuse”.

Drugs when abused result in adverse or harmful effects on abuser Drugs when abused result in adverse or harmful effects on abuser. Such effects include: mental disorder, damaged lungs , kidneys, heart, and other social problems.

EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE Abuse of drugs such as Indian hemp, heroine, cocaine, caffeine, barbiturates and others can affect the following ways:   AREAS AFFECTED : HEART-Depression, hallucination, brain damage, damaged lungs, psychiatric illnesses EDUCATION-Poor performance in school, dropping out of school, lateness.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR Aggression, withdrawal from peers, crime oriented actions e.g. stealing, fighting, murder, broken homes, etc. ECONOMY Loss of human resources, financial waste due to drug spending, family poverty. MORAL Prostitution, rapes, life frustration.

PREVENTION OF DRUG ABUSE Avoid bad company Have a great future ambition Read educative materials on dangers of drug abuse Set high standard of good behavior Be engaged in positive social activities.

DRUG CONTROL AGENCIES National Drug law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA): They help in arresting those involved in transporting, trafficking and use of illegal drugs. National Agency For Food And Drug Administration And Control (NAFDAC): They prevent importation, sales and use of fake and harmful drugs.
