Using Your Sky Software Found at the Sky Maps link at the PHY250 website Some useful information Dayton, OH is at about 40 o North Latitude and 84 o West Longitude Remember, the brighter the object is, the SMALLER the magnitude The eye can detect objects to around magnitude 6 The map can be “cleaned up” manipulating the magnitudes that are displayed and the toggle the names of objects off or on YourSkySoftware.ppt

Universal Time (UT) Formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time The times of various events, particularly astronomical and weather phenomena, are often given in "Universal Time" (abbreviated UT) which is sometimes referred to, now colloquially, as "Greenwich Mean Time" (abbreviated GMT). The two terms are often used loosely to refer to time kept on the Greenwich meridian (longitude zero), five hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. Times given in UT are almost always given in terms of a 24-hour clock. Thus, 14:42 (often written simply 1442) is 2:42 p.m., and 21:17 (2117) is 9:17 p.m.

Prime Meridian Dayton is 5 hours behind UT

Using Your Sky Software If you wish to change the time of day in the sky map to match the time you will be going out to make your observations, you must change the time using the Universal Time format.
