Presentation transcript:

 July 30, April 7, 1947  Did not invent automobile, but developed the first automobile that Americans could afford  Helped to develop the assembly line technique of mass production  In 1914, sales passed 250,000. By 1916, sales reached 472,000.  By 1918, half of all cars in America were Model T's.

 The act of “calling” ◦ A social interaction under close parental supervision of a male and female ◦ Courtship before the 1920s ◦ There were firm guidelines and codes of conduct ◦ Usually occurred in the private sphere, in the home of the female  “Calling” was an upper class practice  The lower classes started their own form of “courtship”, which became known as dating ◦ This practice was picked up by the upper classes in the 1920s  How do you think the car helped to change dating?

Girl has to be announced “in season”

 When a man "calls" upon a woman, he usually shows up at her house during an "at home" session and presents his card to the maid who then gives it to the young lady. She then is given the option of accepting his call by letting him in or rejecting it by making up an excuse as to why she cannot see him. Refreshments were often served (though not always), and the entertainment was primarily piano playing in the parlor. But because the lower classes were not so well-endowed so that they own pianos or even parlors, they started their own form of "courtship" which soon became known as dating. This practice was soon picked up by the upper classes, and from there it progressed into the middle class, with which it is still inherently associated today (Bailey 17).
