An Introduction to the Study of the Earth Geography An Introduction to the Study of the Earth BELLRINGER #1 How many continents are there? 2. How many oceans are there?

What is geography? Geography is the study of the Earth, including its surface and the people who live on it. The word geography comes from the Greek word geographia, which means “description of the Earth”. The prefix geo- means “Earth”

Can you name all 7 continents?

Continents

What about the oceans? There are 5!

Oceans

World – Continents and Oceans Why is the Pacific Ocean on this map twice???

Most of the world (about 70%) is covered by water Most of the world (about 70%) is covered by water. The largest bodies of salt water are called oceans. There are 5 major oceans in the world.

Oceans Arctic Atlantic Indian Pacific Southern

Continents The rest of the world (about 30%) is covered by land. The seven largest landmasses are called continents. Africa Antarctica Asia Australia Europe North America South America

Continents Each continent is further divided into separate countries, and each country has its own states and cities. Example: North America (Continent) United States (Country) Louisiana (State) Baton Rouge (City)

North America What are some of the countries that are in North America? USA Mexico Canada

South America What are some countries in South America? Brazil Argentina Peru Chile

Africa What are some countries in Africa? Egypt Kenya Libya Sudan Madagascar (island)

Europe What are some countries in Europe? Spain France Germany Italy United Kingdom (England, etc.)

Asia What are some countries in Asia? China India Japan Russia

Australia Australia is the smallest continent and also its own country. The only country in Australia is…Australia!

Antarctica There are no countries in Antarctica! Why? Because it has zero permanent human residents. 98% of Antarctica is covered in ice.

Continents Poem CONTINENTS TOUR ZEBRAS live in Africa LIONS and ELEPHANTS, too. Australia is down under, Home of the KANGAROO! Clap your hands for Asia! It's the largest one. Antarctica is covered in ice. The PENGUINS sure have fun! North America is where I live. It's where I work and play. In Europe you'll find England, Where the queen rules every day. South America is home to Brazil. It's the largest country there. The world has seven continents, And I've just named them with care!

The Seven Continents North America, South America, holding hands in the west Europe and Asia, side by side, and on Africa they rest Australia stands alone, floating down below And Antarctica is the loneliest, where only penguins want to go!
