Presentation transcript:

Welcome!! Kaylen Gores Teacher: fourth grade at Anne Sullivan in Minneapolis. 907 students pre K -8 th grade Implemented PBIS in school year 4 principals in 9 years Average about 20+ new staff members each year. I am the only one of the original team to be trained on PBIS left at my site.

About Sullivan ELL 49% HHM 3% Special Education 21% Free and reduced 93% Advanced learners 9% We share our building with another school We also house ECSE, ECFE, and 3 autism classrooms, 3 CLASS classrooms and the citywide Deaf/hard of hearing school

Creating Environments to Increase the Likelihood: Universals Annually: – Revisit your set of expectations and teaching activities – Assess and address “problem spots” across school environments – Assess effective instruction and management in each classroom High Rates of Positive Feedback

What do we do? Annually: each fall conduct a half day refresher for all staff around PBIS. Define it, set out expectations, answer questions, elicit feedback about what is going well and what needs work. **our PD**

During the year Meet with team to discuss behavior: look at data, talk with behavior team members, and decide a focus area. Plan and prepare for the monthly rewards. Develop “helper” groups for teachers who are struggling with certain students and develop a system to support them.

Staff involvement Make sure to include minutes to all staff Report out ODR and other pertinent information to staff (big picture effect) Praise staff and students for effort and things that they are doing well!!! Highlight re-teaching times and structures AND…

Be the Cheerleader!

Without upkeep…

You MUST maintain your staff PD, no matter what! You MUST maintain your meetings with your team and build a core group of people to work with. Your core group MUST be representative of your staff ….but…. They must WANT to be there (this can get a little tricky!)

Make sure to report your data often, to both administration and staff. Publish in your school newsletter (focus on the positive) Get kids involved! Poster contests, peer leaders, etc. Keep promoting, cheerleading and keeping PBIS in the “now”. With each new administration they need to see the success that you have had with PBIS. Have things solid and in place.
