The Population and Community Development Association (PDA) Rotary Clubs of Calgary, Las Vegas and Bangkok 0707V1 Post-Tsunami Development Endeavour

PDA is grateful for the support of ‘The James Wheeler Joint Venture' of The Rotary Clubs of Bangkok and Calgary’ initiative to partner the villages of Tha Len and Tha Thong Lang, Krabi province, as part of PDA’s post-Tsunami endeavour

Whilst most other organisations have now left the Tsunami affected areas (with work unfinished), PDA sees its sustainable post-Tsunami support as a long-term process We have been working in 63 villages in Krabi and Phang Nga, undertaking a comprehensive rehabilitation approach.

The partnership commences with the Community Empowerment process Elected community members articulate needs and plan activities as our partner through the following four steps:

1.Assessment and Preliminary Planning Villagers conduct Community Needs Assessment

2. ‘Eye-Opener’ Field Trips to Generate New Ideas Villagers travel to gather new ideas and observe successful business activities.

3. Finalize Development Plan Villagers expand and prioritize activities, conduct baseline survey, set time frame and identify cooperating agencies.

4. Implementation and Monitoring Activities are implemented by the villagers, with assistance from cooperating agencies and PDA

This Community Participation and Empowerment process has enabled the villagers to design, plan and implement 3 groups of activities concerning: 1.Children and Youth 2.Health and Environment 3.Income Generation

Our work covers the following activities: 1.School Lunch Program 2.School Farm 3.Educational Support Package 4.Youth Psychological Support & Rehabilitation 5.Village Youth Council 6.Health Education 7.Water and Sanitation 8.Tree Planting & Coastal Zone Management 9.Cash for Work 10.Women’s Economic Empowerment 11.Boat Bank 12.Village Bank

The Rotary Club partnership will emphasise: training for business opportunities (tourism), activities leading to the creation of a village bank and ensuring the long-term protection of the community’s natural resources

Our activities tackle the root cause of poverty, rather than concentrating on the consequence of poverty

The three groups of activities in the Rotary Club sponsored endeavours are:

Eight youth (aged 14 – 24) in each village are elected to the serve in the Village Youth Council Coordinate health education campaigns Prepare project proposals and seek funds Initiate business ventures for youth Village Youth Council

PDA proposes allocating this additional funding to a health program that will address basic health needs that have been neglected in the area.

A PDA-conducted basic health check of primary school children in the Tsunami villages found 90% had health problems : - 72% with dental problems - 52% with lice - 35% malnourished

Health activities include: Health screening Preventive Health Information Basic Hygiene
