“Showcasing the several facets of video and participatory culture” The move from Literacy to Electracy. Cultural importance and prevalence of memes. Limitations and benefits of architecture. Possibility for cultural and civic engagement through video. Scholarly potential.

Literacy vs. Electracy Literacy has been commonly understood as the ability to read and comprehend text. It is necessary to function in every day tasks. With the development of technology, electracy has emerged as a necessary component to every day life as well. Given this transition, I propose that YouTube has the potential to expand our knowledge of our culture through participation and contributing to it. “Heuretics is, therefore, presented as a workable method for reinventing literacy in the electronic or, what is frequently called, the post-literate age. It signals an attempt to integrate visual and verbal discourse.” -Jarrett

I propose… YouTube, as a growing phenomenon, has the ability to bring cultures and societies together, develop our understanding of pop culture, and establish confidence which can develop our craft as writers and composition students.

Memes are the reason we got rid of the saying “have you heard the one about…” and changed it to “have you seen that one video when…”

Scholarly Potential YouTube can also be a way to learn and spread information to others. Can be used by educators to spread information to the masses and receive news from anywhere. Ability to engage in pop culture.

Potential to Develop as Writers and Composition Students With participatory culture we have the ability to engage and receive feedback of our contributions. Whether it be positive or negative, online submissions can be seen as “writing workshops” that allow us to develop the confidence necessary to expand our craft. Ratings, views, subscribers, and comments gives us the reassurance that our work is valuable and is appealing to other people.

Youtube itself as an element of Pop Culture “Reluctance to perform is still seen as performance nonetheless” –Enculturation Even a lack of an online presence is seen looked into just as much as having an online presence.
