Presentation transcript:

Status of QBPM Electronics and Magnet Movers as of June 3 rd 2008 D. McCormick, J Nelson, G White SLAC S Boogert Royal Holloway Y. Honda, Y.Inoue KEK

QBPM Electronics Electronics installed on girders for 19 QBPMs and three reference cavities. Total of 34 QBPMs and 4 reference cavities for ATF2. No change LO and CAL cable plant installed for 16 QBPMs and 3 reference cavities. LO and CAL cables now connected to rack in power supply hut. LO amp died during the move due to either heat or some AC grounding problem that put 62VAC on the ground of the amplifier case. AC problem fixed by using grounded AC power. Also added larger heat sink to amp and planning to add fan as well. IF signal cables, DC power cables and analog read back cables are installed for the 19 QBPMs and reference cavities. No change Cables are terminated on the both ends and connected. Added CAL jumper cables. VME crate is populated with 10 SIS digitizers and two analog input modules. Waiting for a VME CPU to free up from nanobpm system after ATF running is complete. New CPU will arrive from Royal Holloway in the fall. Have moved over nanobpm CPU and VME crate for initial testing. Old CPU will not work in new crate. Will do initial testing in nanobpm crate. Will set up CAL tone and monitor IF signals in SIS modules the over summer shut down. CAL system connected up and getting ready to read out system. Need to have 714 MHz signal pulled in from DR RF hut. Cable already exists to eels bedroom but has to pulled over to power supply hut. Need to have NIM trigger also pulled in from eels bedroom.

O 180 deg Hybrid Analog read back IF signal cables DC power cable LO cable LO phase Adjustment cable QBPM signal cables Down mix electronics box CAL cable

QBPM Software For first operation QBPMs will use a “single” pulse calibration scheme. –This scheme requires LO phases for down mix electronics to be setup and measured. This has been done for install units and LO phase stability has been measured over two days to be about +- 2 degrees C-band. –The distance between the QBPMs must be carefully measured. This determines the phase of the beam signal with respect to the LO for each QBPM electronics channel. –Since all the phases in the system are known before first beam operation, steering the beam to a known x and y quadrant in the first QBPM produces X and Y output waveforms that are used to determine the sign of the offset in each QBPM in the system. –This system will provide the sign of the beam position with a resolution of about 50um, and will be only used for steering the beam to the dump. –No Change –. Normal operation QBPM software will be provided by Royal Holloway. –Will include scale and IQ calibration routines. – CAL tone and temperature monitoring. –No change

Magnet Movers Cable plant for 19 installed movers is nearing completion. –LVDT cable plant has been checkout and all LVDTs are reading back through camac interface. –Mover cables for the above movers are installed and cable checkout is nearly complete. Installed cable plant completely checked out. Rack hardware almost complete –Waiting for final chassis and modules to ship from France after testing with final doublet. Waiting for hardware from France. Hardware checkout. –First verify correct operation of stepper motors, cam angle read back pots and LVDTs. Done –Use machinist flat to set cams 2 and 3 to minimum position and laser position gauge to set cam 1. Done ( need to train ATF personnel to do this. Will use QM16FF and QBPM4 for demonstration purposes). –Set cams to mid range using stepper motors and then: Adjust pots to 5V Done Set LVDTs to zero. Done –Leave movers at midrange for magnet final alignment. Installed movers with hardware not in France are now at midrange. They will lose position when power is switched from temporary to permanent AC power.

Cams 2 and three set to minimum position

Use laser position monitor to set cam 1 to minimum lift and for checking mover performance.

Software checkout –Checkout epics based software for correct magnet mover operation. Glen White almost had the database driven system up and running before he left. Janice is checking out the software from SLAC. –Use laser position monitors to confirm X and Y moves. Will try to check if software is ready –Need to develop fixture to hold electronic level to check roll operation. Still to be done. First need to measure the position of the magnet center to the cams. Still to be done

EPICS Magnet mover control panel

Mover Performance Mover performance using EPICS magnet mover software. Position achieved with a single move command with no iterations.

Status QBPM electronics hardware installation in available beam line area almost complete. –Will set up existing electronics to read out CAL tones to check system health. Almost ready –More work to go on “single” pulse calibration, and Royal Holloway software. Work in progress Magnet mover hardware installation in available beam line area almost complete. –Mover cable check out, still to be completed. Done. – Mover pot and LVDT set up to be done. Done. –Movers must be at midrange position for final alignment. Done. –Check out EPICS mover software. Janice and Glen are on the job! Check out mover trim software. Check out mover roll performance Write software for control system interface. Work not completed during this trip will continue at SLAC with a magnet mover setup there. Plan to be at ATF before first beam for final checkout of all hardware and software. –As the fates allow.
