3 Introduction Successful managers are aware of the ethical climate -Strive to be ethical leaders within the organization. -Most believe they uphold ethical standards in business practices Corporate social responsibility involves consideration of the impact of an organization’s actions on: -Legal -Economic -Ethical -Societal good-will Managing diversity in the workplace is a critical issue -The modern worker is increasingly becoming more diverse

4 Ethical Issue: Yes, No or Maybe Ethical Issue: Situation, problem or opportunity in which an individual must choose among several actions that must be evaluated as morally right or wrong.

6 Remember: Ethics is Not Law, Ethics Rises Above the Law! A practice may in fact be legal in a particular place and still be unethical! -Examples: Sweatshops, child labor, unsafe working conditions, bribes, etc.

12 Sexual Harassment What constitutes sexual harassment? Who is involved? What forms might sexual harassment take?

13 What is sexual harassment? Sexual Harassment is… Conduct of a sexual nature that has negative consequences for employment Two categories -Quid pro quo: submission to or rejection of sexual conduct is used as a basis for employment decision -Hostile environment: when unwelcome sexual conduct “has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with job performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment”

14 Components of a Sexual Harassment Policy 1.Comprehensive, organization-wide policy shared with all employees. 2.Supervisor training sessions explaining: Title VII requirements Their role Proper investigative procedures 3.Formal complaint procedure in which employees can discuss problems without fear of retaliation. 4.Act immediately on sexual harassment complaints 5.If investigation supports employee charges, discipline the offender at once. 6.Follow up on all cases to ensure satisfactory problem resolution

15 Application of the process: Case study: A hospital had a sexual harassment policy that was strictly enforced. They also held all vendors to the same standard. One evening a vendor who was working at the hospital followed one of the employees to her car and started harassing her in the hospital parking lot. What should the hospital do?
