Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Do now: Why do you think things are repeated in threes in the story?

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight  1. What are the three main points of the Green Knight’s speech when he enters Camelot?  The Green Knight has heard great reports of King Arthur and his knights, he comes in peace, and he wants to enter into a contest with King Arthur.

Sir Gawain  2. What challenge does the Green Knight make to Arthur’s court?  He will allow King Arthur to strike him with an ax, provided that in a year and a day, Arthur will allow him to strike him with one swing also.  3. What aspect of medieval romance does the Green Knight illustrate?  It combines realistic and supernatural elements.

Sir Gawain  4. In what ways are Gawain’s words when he stands up to the Green Knight consistent with the ideals of chivalry?  Gawain’s words reflect the qualities of humility, respect for the king, and courtesy.

Sir Gawain  5. Summarize the events as Sir Gawain approaches the Green Knight to accept his challenge.  Green Knight bows his head, Gawain picks up the ax and deals a sharp blow, cutting off his head. The head rolls. The Knight picks up his head and leaves on his horse.

Sir Gawain  6. What does Gawain do to the Green Knight?  He cuts off the Green Knights head with one swing.

Sir Gawain  7. What happens after Gawain does the answer to 5?  The Green Knight reminds Gawain that he must find him in a year and a day. He reveals he is the Knight of the Green Chapel and gallops off.
