Board Work 9/29-10/2

Walpurgis Night Is Faust enjoying himself? How do you know? Should he be? Give evidence. Compare Mephisto’s ability to give Faust pleasures here as opposed to “Auerbach’s Tavern.” What has changed? What conclusion can you draw? What does Faust actually see on page 119? How does he interpret it? Can we trust his senses? How does Mephisto interpret it? Can we trust his explanations? What does the vision mean in the context of the scene as a whole? Faust seems to have loosened up a bit by this point in the book. Have you ever had an experience that at first felt uncomfortable, but after a while you got used to it and got more comfortable? How did that happen for you? How is it happening for Faust?

Rhetoric! Look at the following pieces: –Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence p.37 –Paine’s Common Sense p.45 How do these pieces organize their arguments? What is the thesis statement? What evidence do the pieces provide? What methods/techniques do they use to prove their points?

Faust Movie What were the director’s goals in adapting the play to a film? Why did he include or leave out various elements? How did he convey similar ideas through a different medium? How did the limitations of a silent film play into his choices? Give examples. If you were to adapt the story into a modern film, what would you do? Why?
