The EEA marine and coastal work programme – what are we going to do in 2011? Trine Christiansen Project manager

Workshop objective: To discuss the future EEA marine and coastal assessments, data and indicator set in the light of the recent developments of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

2010: Year for publication of EEA State of the Environment report Part A provides a long-term explorative, cross- cutting assessment of key global mega-trends Part B provides Europe-wide assessments of 12 environmental themes Part C provides country-level assessments of the environmental situation in individual countries A SOER 2010 Synthesis provides an assessment based on Parts A, B and C

Nutrient enrichment, heavy metals and persistent organic contaminants continues to be a major problem in the coastal and marine environment in all Europes seas. Change in N-concentration Change in P-concentration

Nutrient enrichment, heavy metals and persistent organic contaminants continues to be a major problem in the coastal and marine environment in all Europes seas.

Unsustainable fishing occurs in all European Seas and is threatening the viability of European fish stocks. Safe biological limitsMaximum Sustainable Yield

Climate change is causing sea surface temperatures and sea level to rise and they likely to rise further – and oceans are becoming more acidic

Designation of coastal and marine Natura 2000 sites has been slow. The conservation status of many coastal and marine habitats and species still needs to be assessed Status of marine speciesMarine Natura 2000 sites

Marine Protected Areas (e.g. Natura2000) Marine Strategy Framework Directive for the Protection and Conservation of the Marine Environment EU Integrated Maritime Policy, incl. CFP Water Framework Directive Coastal area New EU policy context: Ecosystem based management

Cyclical approach of Marine Strategy Framework Directive 6 year cycle To be repeated every 6 years

Criteria for GES Published September 1, new indicators for the marine environment No inter regional agreement on how to report Major activity to establish reporting process for data from initial assessments

DATA ASSESSMENTS Decision-makers / The public / NGOs / Researchers ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION SERVICES for INDICATORS Distributing information & knowledge

E uropean M arine O bservation D ata NET work Wise-Marine Country data Integrated Maritime Policy – Marine knowledge has identified Marine Observations as a need MSFD Research data Policy relevant data Reference layers (maps) Marine Core Service data WG-Dike?

The role of GMES – the Marine Core Service and in-situ data Marine core service provides near real time data on salinity, temperature and ocean currents for all EU seas Based on a combination of models, satellite and in-situ observations

Looking quite far ahead: EEA expects to be tasked with producing a marine integrated assessment around Discussions and preparations are already starting. Partly the motivation for maritime Eionet workshop Integrated Marine and maritime assessment 2015

Major Reports in 2012: 2012 Water Assessment 2012 Coastal Report 2012 Eureca Assessment Work programme will be structured around data, indicators, and sub-assessments needed for these outputs All reports are expected to contribute to the European Environmental policy agenda

Baseline assessment of presssures state and trends (based on RBMPs) Wants to pursue putting the baseline into a wider context, but how depends on Commission Priorities and is likely to point back at ressource effeciency 2012 Water report: River Basin Mangement Plans published in 2010 Legal interpretation of RBMPs Planning larger studies of content, but not yet known of what. Commission Priority is Water Blueprint but content is not yet known ENV EEA

Coastal Report Update of 2006 coastal report: Changing faces of Europes Seas Contribution to ICZM process Regional assessment (led by the land group) Focus on drivers of coastal change and coastal vulnerability Some overlap with 2012 Water Report is expected

Eureca assessment EEA will publish a 2012 European Ecosystem Assessment (EURECA) Better expression of impacts on human health and socio- economics It has recently been decided to revise the structure of this report
