This project gets funding from the European Commission Dipl.-Ing. Rainer Malkewitz phone +49 / 6151 / = Enhancing Usefulness & Usability of 3D Product Models

This project gets funding from the European Commission The problem with 3D Why do they not use 3D ??? pro: 3D problems benefit by 3D modelling walkthroughs / immersion possible virtual photography animated behaviour / 3D films simulation / collision detection con: Using 3D is expensive authoring cost (specialists) transport and rendering costs (resources, downloading) cognitive costs (learning time, 2D control devices, habit) high cost, low reach

This project gets funding from the European Commission What will we do? Enhance the benefit (add usefulness) introduce new 3D-only features integrate with business processes use cross-company and cross-industry Reduce the cost (add usability) reduce transport and rendering costs enhance usability by new intelligent features build on user experience from physical world reduce cognitive overload in tools less buttons, more intelligence

This project gets funding from the European Commission In what context? 3 application areas (10 partners) : Furniture & architecture (5 p.) Automotive & mechanical engineering (3 p.) Toys (2 p.)

This project gets funding from the European Commission How is it going to be done? 4 step technical workplan: collect and prioritise requirements (problems) develop computational methods (solutions) develop prototype tools (examples) demonstrate and test non-technical WPs: project management dissemination & exploitation evaluation & assessment

This project gets funding from the European Commission existing ideas from furniture scenario: generic product objects configure and search by specifying functionality select from list of best matches hierarchical grouping (container, element, component) linking to product properties provide interface to PPS data (for real ordering features) provide common features, e.g.: physical features (orientation, placement, fixation, weight) business features (supplier, ordering number, brands, type of use) advanced features (lighting rules, reserved spaces, style, preferred neighbours, receiving surfaces & handles)
