Christians Taking Care of the Earth By: Marissa Worden Kaitlyn Arredondo

Colossians 1:16-17 “ “For by Him all things were created; things in heaven and things on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities ;all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Insight About God Many Christians don’t realize the strong biblical basis for creation care. Humankinds first home was the garden of Eden. The Lord commanded Adam and Eve to care for the garden. These are the same words that command us to take care of the earth also. Many of the Verses in the Bible talk about how much God liked what he made. One of the questions we could think about is whether or not we are giving glory to God by the way we are taking care of the creation.

Essence of the Earth By taking care of the earth in essence we are praising God. God says that without Him the earth would fall apart, “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”(Colossians 1:16-17) God specifically commanded us take care of living and non-living things. By taking care of the earth we allow it to be fruitful and to play its intended role in the glory of God. Also, one day the cosmos will we renewed and recreated as the “new heavens and the new earth.” The New and Old Testament refer to this. This will bring the fullness of life just as God intended.

Changes We Can Make In just making small changes like decreasing our use of gases and oils, reducing our carbon emissions, or even just recycling can make a big difference in the long run of the universe. The Bible paints creation, not as passive or a collection of inanimate objects, but an entity full of life, full of praise and full of God’s glory. We have solidarity with the earth and are utterly dependent on it and connected with it, therefore, we should take good care of it. Our treatment of the earth is dependent not only on our attitude to the earth now, but also our view of God’s promises for the future.
