The Titanic had four funnels but two of them were for show and were not used.

The ship was loaded with only enough lifeboats to hold half of the Titanic passengers. Some of the lifeboats were lowered only half-full. Among the property reported as lost on the Titanic were over 3000 bags of mail and an automobile. The ship contained a heated swimming pool. The ship was still so brand new when passengers boarded it on April 10, 1912 that the paint was still wet in some parts. Every stateroom contained electric lighting and heat. Of the 1517 people who perished in the sinking of the Titanic, only 306 bodies were recovered. The largest percentage of survivors came from first class passengers. Most of the women and children lost in the sinking came from second and third class. Captain Smith had made plans to retire after seeing the Titanic safely across the Atlantic on her maiden voyage. It took three years to fully construct the ship. Among the provisions when the Titanic set sail in Southampton, England were 40,000 eggs, 75,000 pounds of fresh meat and 1,000 bottles of wine. The Titanic's total capacity was 3547 passengers + crew. The Titanic's weight fully loaded was 46,328 tons. The Titanic was 882 feet/268 meters long. There were 29 boilers on board of the ship. The ship consumed 825 tons of coal in one day. The top speed of the Titanic was 23 knots.

Robert W. Daniel "Not until the last five minutes did the awful realization come that the end was at hand. The lights became dim and went out, but we could see. Slowly, ever so slowly, the surface of the water seemed to come towards us. So gradual was it that even after I had adjusted the life jacket about my body it seemed a dream. Deck after deck was submerged. There was no lurching or grinding or crunching. The Titanic simply settled. I was far up on one of the top decks when I jumped. About me were others in the water. My bathrobe floated away, and it was icily cold. I struck out at once. I turned my head, and my first glance took in the people swarming on the Titanic’s deck. Hundreds were standing there helpless to ward off approaching death. I saw Captain Smith on the bridge. My eyes seemingly clung to him. The deck from which I had leapt was immersed. The water had risen slowly, and was now to the floor of the bridge. Then it was to Captain Smith’s waist. I saw him no more. He died a hero. The bows of the ship were far beneath the surface, and to me only the four monster funnels and the two masts were now visible. It was all over in an instant. The Titanic’s stern rose completely out of the water and went up 30, 40, 60 feet into the air. Then, with her body slanting at an angle of 45 degrees, slowly the Titanic slipped out of sight."

The last survivor of the sinking of the Titanic has died aged 97. Millvina Dean was nine weeks old when the liner sank after hitting an iceberg in the early hours of 15 April 1912, on its maiden voyage from Southampton. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people in the north Atlantic, largely due to a lack of lifeboats. Her family had been travelling in third class to America, where they hoped to start a new life and open a tobacconist's shop in Kansas City. “ If it hadn't been for the ship going down, I'd be an American ” she said. Millvina died on the 1 st June 2009.
