Definition Also known as Intellectual Disability. Mental Retardation is defined by a below average intelligence and set of life skills. It is noticed before the age of 18.
Causes Trauma before or during birth, such as oxygen loss, alcohol exposure, or infection. Genetic abnormalities, such as inherited abnormal genes, Down syndrome, and fragile X syndrome. PKU (phenylketonuria) lead or mercury poisoning in the womb.
Symptoms Impulsivity and Hyperactivity is typically seen in those with Mental Retardation. May also include difficulty thinking, and understanding, coupled with restlessness.
Treatments There is no sure for mental retardation. However, those with the disorder can benefit from: Behavior Therapy Animal-Assisted Therapy Specific kinds of drug therapy
