Writing in a Formal Style

Writing in a Formal Style Things to remember when writing a school paper in the “formal style”: 1. Do not use 1st person pronouns(I and we) or 2nd person pronouns (you). 2. Do not use contractions (can’t/won’t). 3. Use a formal tone 4. Avoid slang

Writing in a Formal Style What does it mean when we say “use a formal tone”? Write in a style that your audience expects and that fits your purpose.

Writing in a Formal Style 3 examples of style: Cover letters for a job application

Writing in a Formal Style (Written to an unknown audience): I am applying for the receptionist position advertised in the local paper. I am an excellent candidate for the job because of my significant secretarial experience, good language skills, and sense of organization.

Writing in a Formal Style Semi-formal (Written to a well-known individual): I am applying for the receptionist position that is currently open in your company. As you are aware, I have worked as a temporary employee with your company in this position before. I already have some experience and knowledge of this position, and I already understand the company's needs and requirements for this job.

Writing in a Formal Style Informal (Incorrect): Hi! I read in the paper that y’all were looking for a receptionist. I think that I am good for that job because I've done stuff like it in the past, am good with words, and I have my stuff together.

Writing in a Formal Style 2. Slang and idiomatic expressions: Avoid using slang or idiomatic expressions in general academic writing.

Writing in a Formal Style You should avoid using slang: y’all, cool Avoid idiomatic expressions (thanx 3rd pd): “goin ham” Jumpin stupid Mane, you triflin These words make your writing sound informal, and hence, less credible.

Writing in a Formal Style Your assignment: Working with a partner, create an example of informal writing. (One idea would be to write a text message to your friend about what you’re doing this weekend.) Then write a corresponding “formal” version of the text. You may turn in one piece of paper, but be sure to list the names of both partners.

Informal/Formal assignment Informal text message Just checkin in. How are ya? Formal Note Dear Ben, I know you are just getting home from school. How was your day? Have you gotten a snack yet? Have you arranged transportation to practice? Your Mother
