StopPreviousNext About Vicnet Internet training workbooks This workbook is part of a series of workbooks in Easy English. They provide basic information on how to use the Internet. You can see all the workbooks on the Vicnet website: The workbooks were written by Vicnet at the State Library of Victoria. The funding came from Department of Planning and Community Development. StopPreviousNext How to use this workbook This workbook should be used with a trainer. The trainer could be a friend or someone from your school, library, neighbourhood house or other organisation. Websites on the Internet change often. The text and pictures in this workbook may be different from those you see on the Internet. StopPreviousNext Introduction YouTube is a video-sharing website. You can watch videos of music, or videos of how to do things like cooking or fixing things. You can search for videos on YouTube for all ages, of any subject, and in many languages. If you become a member of YouTube, you can upload your own videos on to YouTube. You can share videos with friends and family. You can become a member by creating your own account. Membership is free. 6

StopPreviousNext The YouTube website You can find the YouTube website on the internet. Follow these steps. 1. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. 2. Do 1 click. 3. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. 4. Type in this website address 5. Press the Enter key on your keyboard. 7

StopPreviousNext You will see the YouTube home page. You do not have to join YouTube to search and watch videos. If you would like to upload your own videos, you need to create your own account and become a member. 8

StopPreviousNext Watch a video You can watch a video on YouTube. Remember you do not have to be a member of YouTube to watch videos. You will see many pictures on the YouTube home page. Each picture represents a video. 1. Use your scroll bar to move up and down the web page. 9

StopPreviousNext 2. Move your mouse over the picture of the video you want to watch. 3. Do 1 click. The YouTube video will appear. You can watch the video. It will start to download and play. 10

StopPreviousNext About downloading The video will be copied from the YouTube website onto your computer. This is called download. The download of the video may be very quick or it may take a longer time. You do not need to wait for the whole video to download. When the video has been partly downloaded it will start to play. The red line at the bottom of the video screen is called the download bar. 11

StopPreviousNext The red line moves along towards the right as the video is downloading. This example shows the video has been partly downloaded. When the red line has moved all the way across to the right this means that downloading has finished. This example shows the video has been downloaded. 12

StopPreviousNext Replay the video When the video has ended you can replay it. This means that you can watch the same video again. 1. Move your mouse over the Replay button. 2. Do 1 click. The video will start to play again. 13

StopPreviousNext Search for a video You can search for a video on YouTube that you would like to watch. Use the Search box on the YouTube website. 1. Move your mouse over the Search box. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Type in the words for your search. For this example type the oscars Press the Enter key on your keyboard. 14

StopPreviousNext The search results will appear. 5. Move your mouse over the picture of the video you want to watch. 6. Do 1 click. The video will start to download and play. When the video ends you can replay the same video or search for another video. 15

StopPreviousNext The control panel The control panel is at the bottom of the video screen. You can use the buttons on the control panel when you are watching a video on YouTube. Use the buttons on the control panel to:  pause/stop the video restart/play the video control the volume of the video make the video fill the whole screen 16

StopPreviousNext Pause button This is the Pause button. The Pause button is used to stop the video from playing. 1. Move your mouse over the pause button. 2. Do 1 click. The video will stop playing. The Pause button will change to the Restart or Play button. 17

StopPreviousNext Restart/Play button This is the Restart/Play button. The Restart/Play button is used to restart the video (if the video has been paused) or to play the video. 1. Move your mouse over the Restart/Play button. 2. Do 1 click. The video will start to play. The Restart/Play button will change to the Pause button 18

StopPreviousNext Full screen button This is the Full screen button. The full screen button is used to make the video fill up your screen. 1. Move your mouse over the full screen button. 2. Do 1 click. The video will take up your whole computer screen. 19

StopPreviousNext You can go back to the normal screen view. 3. Press the Esc (Escape) key on your keyboard. The normal screen view will appear. 20

StopPreviousNext Sound button This is the Sound button. The Sound button is used to change the volume of the video. 1. Move your mouse over the Sound button. You will see the sound control bar appear in the control panel. 2. Move your mouse over the button on the sound control bar. 21

StopPreviousNext 3. Do 1 click and hold the left mouse button down. You can make the sound louder or softer using the sound button. 4. Move your mouse to the right to make the sound louder. 5. Move your mouse to the left to make the sound softer. 22

StopPreviousNext Adding your own videos If you make your own video, you can upload it to YouTube. When you upload, you copy the video from your computer to the YouTube website. You will need to become a member and create a YouTube account to upload a video. Before you start to upload a video to YouTube there are a few things you should know about:  Privacy Video length Copyright Renaming your video 23

StopPreviousNext Privacy Privacy means that you can decide who can watch your video. Tick the private box when you upload your video. You can allow up to 50 people who you know to watch your video. Video length Your video can be up to 15 minutes long. A video can be no larger than 2 gigabytes. 24

StopPreviousNext Copyright You are not allowed to upload a video without the owner’s permission. This includes videos from television or film. This also includes music and photographs that someone else has made. If you upload someone else’s videos, music or pictures without their permission, the video will be removed from YouTube. Information about Copyright is on the YouTube website. 25

StopPreviousNext Rename your videos Before you upload your video give it a name. The name tells people something about the video. Find where the video is saved on your computer. This may be in the Videos library Move your mouse over the Start button. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over Computer. Do 1 click. 26

StopPreviousNext Move your mouse over Libraries. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over Videos. Do 2 clicks. You will see the Videos library. 9.Move your mouse over the video you would like to name. 10. Do 1 right click. 27

StopPreviousNext You will see a menu. 11. Move your mouse over Rename. 12.Do 1 click. The current name of the video will be shaded in blue. 13. Type in the name for this video. For example type My workstation 28

StopPreviousNext Create a YouTube account If you are not a member of YouTube you can create a YouTube account Move your mouse over Create Account on the YouTube home page. Do 1 click. You will see the Get started with your account page. Gmail has been used for this example. 29

StopPreviousNext Type in your address and Username. Move your mouse over Check Availability. Do 1 click. This checks if another person has already chosen that Username. If no one else has chosen that username you will see the message (in green) Username available! If the message (in red) says the Username is not available then choose a different username. 30

StopPreviousNext 6.Press the Tab key on your keyboard to move to the next box. 7. Leave the location set as Australia. 8. Press the Tab key. 9. Select your date of birth. Move your mouse over the down arrow key next to the month. 10. Do 1 click. A list of months will appear. 11. Move your mouse over the down arrow next to the month for your birthday. 31

StopPreviousNext 12. Do 1 click. 13. Repeat steps 9 to 12 to select the day and year for your birthday. 14. Press the Tab key. 15. Do 1 click with your mouse on the round button for your gender. 16. If you want other people to find your videos if they have your address, leave the tick in the box. 17. Read the Terms of Use. 18. Move your mouse over I accept. 19. Do 1 Click. 32

StopPreviousNext If you have a Google account (Gmail) you will see this screen. 1. Move your mouse over Password. 2. Type in your password. 3. Move your mouse over Link accounts. 4. Do 1 click. This screen will appear. You are now registered with YouTube. Your YouTube and Google Accounts are now linked. See your account name. You are signed in to YouTube. 33

StopPreviousNext If you do not have a Google account and you have another account such as Yahoo, you will see this screen. You will see your current address. 1. Move your mouse over password. 2. Type in your password. 3. Press the Tab key. 4. Re-enter your password. 5. Press the Tab key. 6. Type in the word verification as displayed – the wavy letters. 34

StopPreviousNext 7. Move your mouse over Create my new account. 8. Do 1 click. You will see the You Tube home page. You will need to confirm your address. A confirmation will be sent to your address. 1. Sign in to your (Yahoo) account. 2. You will see the Google Verification in your inbox. 3. Move your mouse over the . 35

StopPreviousNext 4. Do 2 clicks. The will appear. 5. Move your mouse over the link. 6. Do 1 click. You will see a new window. You are now registered with YouTube. See your account name. You are signed in to YouTube. Use your address and password to sign in to YouTube next time. 36

StopPreviousNext Sign Out Remember to Sign out of your YouTube account when you are finished. 1. Move your mouse over Sign out. 2. Do 1 click. You are now signed out of your YouTube account. You will see the YouTube home page. 37

StopPreviousNext Upload a video Sign in to YouTube 1. Move your mouse over Sign in. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Move your mouse over the box next to Username. 4. Do 1 click. Type in your Username. 5. Move your mouse over the box next to Password. 6. Do 1 click. 7. Type in your Password. 38

StopPreviousNext 8. Move your mouse over Sign in. 9. Do 1 click. You will see a new screen with your account name. You are now signed in and ready to upload your video to YouTube. Make sure you do not have the box ticked next to - Stay signed in Remember this computer may be in a public place. 1. Move your mouse over Upload. 2. Do 1 click. You will see a new window. 3. Move your mouse over Upload video. 39

StopPreviousNext 4. Do 1 click. 5. Move your mouse over the Libraries folder on your computer. 6. Do 2 clicks. It is a good idea to keep your videos in the Videos folder. 7. Move your mouse over the Videos folder. 8. Do 2 clicks. You will see your videos. 9. Move your mouse over the video you want to use. 10. Do 2 clicks. 40

StopPreviousNext You will see a blue bar. This shows the progress of the video as it is uploading to the YouTube website. When the video has finished uploading you will see this screen. 41

StopPreviousNext File information File information can now be added. File information is added to help others search for your video. File information includes information that can be attached to the video, such as:  title  description  tags  category  privacy 42

StopPreviousNext Title This is the Title box. The name of this video is automatically shown in the title box. You can change it. Description This is the Description box. In the description box you will type a sentence or two to tell people what the video is about. 1. Move your mouse over the Description box. 2. Do 1 click. 43

StopPreviousNext 3. Type in a sentence or two that tells people what the video is about. Tags This is the Tags box. In the tags box you can type in key words that will help people search for this video. 1. Move your mouse over the Tags box. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Type in a few key words that can help people search for this video. 44

StopPreviousNext Category This is the Category menu. The category menu shows topics for example sports or music. This will help when people search for a video under a topic 1. Move your mouse over the arrow next to the Category box. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Move your mouse over the category which tells people what category the video fits into. For example Education. 4. Do 1 click. 45

StopPreviousNext Privacy This is the Privacy section. If you would like to keep your video private and share it only with people you know (up to 50 people) make sure you have clicked on the Private button. 1. Move your mouse over the circle next to Private. 2. Do 1 click. You have completed the file information. 46

StopPreviousNext You are ready to finish uploading the video to the YouTube website. 1. Move your mouse over Save changes. 2. Do 1 click. You will see a new screen. The video settings have been saved. The video has now been uploaded to YouTube. 47

StopPreviousNext My Videos To search for the videos you have uploaded go to the My Videos section. You will need to sign in to YouTube to look at My Videos. 1. Move your mouse over the arrow next to your account name. 2. Do 1 click. A list will appear. 3. Move your mouse over My Videos. 4. Do 1 click. 48

StopPreviousNext You will see My Uploaded Videos. The videos you have uploaded to YouTube are here. You can watch your videos from this screen. 1. Move your mouse over the picture of the video you want to watch. 2. Do 1 click. The video will start to play. When you have finished you can return to the YouTube home page. 49

StopPreviousNext Share a video When you upload your video to YouTube you can select the Private setting. This means that you can decide who you want to see your video. You can invite your family and friends to watch your video. When you select the Private setting, your family and friends must have an account with YouTube to watch your video. 50

StopPreviousNext 1. Move your mouse over the arrow next to your Account name. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Move your mouse over My Videos. 4. Do 1 click. You will see My Uploaded Videos. 5. Find the picture of the video you will share. 6. Move your mouse over Edit. 7. Do 1 click. 51

StopPreviousNext The Info and Settings screen will appear. 8. Scroll down the screen until you see the Privacy section. 9. Move your mouse over the button next to Private (only people you choose can view). 10. Do 1 click. 11. Move your mouse in the box under To (Username). 12. Do 1 click. 13. Type in theYouTube Username of your friend or family member. 52

StopPreviousNext 14. Move your mouse in the box under Message. 15. Do 1 click. 16. Type a message. 17. Move your mouse over Send. 18. Do 1 click. 53 Your message will be sent by to the receiver. The receiver will need to click on the link in their to watch your video. They will have to sign in to their YouTube account to watch the video.
