World Of Architecture Chapter 1

Man and his Structures Over the years a number of architectural styles for house construction have been developed. Many of the structures were deigned to meet climatic conditions and needs of families Some were planned for luxuries living Some housing designs were so popular they took on names related to their shape, period of time or area of the country in which they were built.

The Cape Colonial Over 200 years ago Comfortable and livable atmosphere and the rooms are large and functional. Cape Cod and Cape Ann

Cape Cod Earliest and best known traditional Colonel Styles Small Home with a steep roof and little overhang - Central fireplace - 1.5 or 2 story Has Shutters on all Windows

Cape Ann Larger chimney then Cod Gambrel Roof usually a small dormer Attic Storage that can be changed in to rooms

The Garrison Overhand second story, extra space Steep roof Narrow Siding – Simple Entrance

The Salt Box Lean to – High roof in front and Back Good Against strong Winds 6” Siding, Large Chimney Central Located Paned windows with no shutters

Tudor House half-timbering – wood is left exposed around the stucco and brick Arches and Bay windows – 16th century

Southern Colonial Gracious of all Colonials Traditional Charm - massive Extended Portico shelters front entrance

Modern Structures Ranch Style Long one story house from the ranchers home Low Pitched roof with gables and overhanging eaves. Attached garage 1932 started in California – a lot of houses were built in the post war boom

1 ½ Story Steep Roof Dormers

2 Story House Bedrooms on the top level Attached Garage Service areas on the lower level

Split Level or Split Entry originated in the 1950s and 1960s main living on the second level Lower level is recreation and storage

Contemporary first designed between 1950 and 1970 open interior with high, and often, cathedral ceilings The exterior of the home is typically flat and neutral
