Dan Ford SOC-240 October 22, 2013 THE CONSERVATIVE COUNTERREVOLUTION IN THE ERA OF REAGAN AND BUSH SR.

WHAT WAS GOING ON AT THIS TIME? War on Drugs Crack Vietnam War ended a few years before Reagan’s term Nation focused on security Anti-communistic views The Cold War Nation focused on security Soviet Union Collapse

RONALD REAGAN: Cut funds for several welfare programs, and increased military spending Subsidized housing for the poor Cut Taxes Poverty: Further expanded the income gap between the rich and the poor Poverty rate grew in major cities Average wages dropped Number of homeless people increased drastically Vietnam War veterans Not treated well when they came home from the war

GEORGE BUSH SR.: Continued Reagan’s policy of high spending allotments for the military National Defense “Read my lips, no new taxes!” Tried to cut spending on social programs Had a hard time doing this because the House of Representatives and the Senate were both Democratically controlled, and Bush was a Republican president
