Training That Sticks: Design Tips from the NC Master Trainers Sponsored by: Library Administration and Management Section (LAMS) NCLA Conference 2009 – NC Libraries: Serving Knowledge … Serving You

Welcome! Tiffany Hayes, Librarian and Master Trainer: Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center (Fayetteville, NC) LAMS Workshop - Training That Sticks: Design Tips from the Master Trainers http://ncmastertrainers.pbworks.com

Before You Train … You Plan! Questions Your Thoughts Who are the trainers? Who are the learners? Trainer—a Circ. Manager who has been to the system vendor’s official training course Learners—Circ staff? Info staff? What will you be presenting? What equipment needs do you have? Presenting—basic circ. procedures of the new system Equipment—projector and laptop; individual computers with the new system Date/time of day; duration of training session? 2-hour training session on a weekday morning Physical location of training session; room features? Meeting room of one of the library branches, tables and chairs; mobile laptops Training techniques and formats? Lots of hands-on practice; comparison between the old system and the new one LAMS Workshop - Training That Sticks: Design Tips from the Master Trainers http://ncmastertrainers.pbworks.com

Needs Assessment: What do you know about the audience? What does your audience need to know about the topic? Learning Objectives: List no more than 3 specific tasks and state them in simple, declarative sentences. Break down big pieces into little pieces. Design effective training based on Needs Assessment / Learning Objectives Knowledge, Skills, Attitude (KSA’s): Where do the learners stand now with the training topic, and where do they need to be? Where’s the difference? LAMS Workshop - Training That Sticks: Design Tips from the Master Trainers http://ncmastertrainers.pbworks.com

Knowledge, Skills, Attitude K = Basic understanding; having overall concept of topic S = Able to perform a task A = What one believes / thinks / feels about the topic or task LAMS Workshop - Training That Sticks: Design Tips from the Master Trainers http://ncmastertrainers.pbworks.com

Sample Training Topic 3 Learning Objectives: Needs Assessment: Circulation staff already know how to use the old catalog system, but are nervous/concerned/frustrated by the prospect of the new one. They need to know how to do basic searching, check-in/check-out, and looking up patron records. 3 Learning Objectives: Staff demonstrate accuracy and confidence in title searches in the new system. Staff comfortably complete the entire check-in/check-out process with at least two items. Staff successfully enter one practice patron record into the system. KSA’s: K = Participants will understand basic check-in/check-out and searching procedures. S = Participants will demonstrate ability to complete basic procedures using the instructional handouts. A = Participants will feel more confident in completing procedures using the new system.
