 How did the first people arrive in the Americas?  Why was the development of agriculture important?  What was some aspects of Mesoamerican culture?  What early societies existed in North America?

 The first people; Paleo-indians, arrived in North America through an ice bridge- which was revealed because of the low water levels- called Beringia.

 Agriculture was important because it allowed Native Americans tribes to settle in and make villages. This led to larger more complex societies.

 Olmec priests created number and calendar systems they also made glyphs  Glyphs: Symbols that represent ideas  Maya built giant stone palaces, bridges, and temples.  They also studied math and astronomy.  The Aztecs made a city in a lake called Tenochtitlan.  They also traded thing like jade, gold and cocoa.  They also studied poetry.

 The Anasazi lived in a desert climate. They made their villages which were called pueblos out of sun-baked clay or adobe.  The Hopewell built large burial mounds to honor the dead.  The Mississippians also made burial mounds. They built pyramid looking mounds. The people held ceremonies on the top of the pyramids

 How did the environment influence Native American cultures in North America?  What types of housing did Native Americans build?  What were various traits of Native Americans in different culture areas?

 The environment influenced Native American cultures because the Indians had to adapt to the environment which cause them to do things differently.  Aleuts used kayaks and dogsleds to travel across the cultural area. They also made houses out of Ice blocks called igloos  The South western tribes made under ground water systems to grow plants  The Pacific coast tribes fished on canoes for otters, whales, and other fishes.

 Their were igloos for the people in the far north  The Tlingit, Nootka, and Skokomish tribes made there houses out wood from evergreen trees  The Anasazi built pueblos

 People of the far north fished and hunted large mammals. They also had dogs for hunting and pulling sleds  People of the Pacific coast survived by eating the sea life and wild plants.  People of the Southwest lived in pueblos and hunted small animals such as rabbits. They also ate bugs and small insects.

 What new lands did the Vikings explore?  What were society and daily life like during the Middle Ages?  How did the Catholic Church affect people’s lives during the Middle Ages?  What events brought about major change in the late Middle Ages?

 The Vikings were the first to explore the islands of Greenland and Iceland  Later the Vikings explored the island of Newfoundland

 Society and daily life was different after the fall of the Roman empire.  Their was a different type of government called feudalism  Feudalism people which were called vassals gave honor to the king for land  More land more power and wealth  Some selected vassals became knights to protect manors  The peasants were in charge of farming the land their pay was the protection from the king

 The Catholic Church affected peoples lives during the Middle Ages because it was the center of social and religious life.  Everybody was welcome to the church  The Church gave rulers advice and paid for art and architecture projects

 The Magna Carta brought major change because it actual freedom to people  The Renaissance was the rebirth of the arts and learning of ancient Greece and Rome  New technology was being used like windmills and watermills

 How did Islam affect the Mediterranean region?  What led the Chinese to join in and then withdraw from international trade?  How did trade influence African kingdoms?

 Islam affected the Mediterranean region by taking its ports and lands.  The Muslims made a powerful navy and dominated the eastern Mediterranean Sea  They also traded and exchanged ideas  They believed in learning

 China went to trade to be wealthy  China received plenty of wealth and knowledge  China left trading because of internal affairs

 African trade made the country extremely wealthy  African kingdoms Most of the wealth was from gold  Islam came and the emperor’s became Muslim
