CHAPTER 2 QUESTIONS # 2, 3 AND 4 CHARACTERISTICS OF DEVELOPMENT WITH REGARD TO COUNTRY CLASSIFICATION

Q.#2: Why might higher levels of development of a country be related to temperate locations? Answer: 1.) Historical Head Start - industrial revolution started in temperate England and Western Europe and then spread to temperate North America and other colonies with similar temperate climate conditions

2.) Wider Range of Disease in Tropical Locations -This may have decimated populations and restricted their ability to develop at a faster pace. 3.) High Humidity or Long Periods of Cold Temperatures - Long periods of extreme climate conditions can limit productivity 4.) Better Diet Available in Temperate Countries - This leads to healthier populations who will have higher levels of productivity

Question #3: Compare the map of the Five Worlds to that of the North- South grouping of countries. What relationships do you see between the two? Answer: - Most First and Second world countries are located in the North - Some second world countries like China, North Korea and Vietnam are located in the south
