3 THE PARADOX OF TOULOUSE An economic and demographic expanding city A part of the population which does not take advantage of the development The unemployment rate of the young people without diplomas, living in districts (zone urbaine sensible) has increased from 30 to 50 % in 10 years

4 The second chance schools An europeen project At the beginning was the verb ! (1995) Then came the action ! (1998)

5 HISTORY The School was created on the initiative of the Regional Council of Midi-Pyrenees The principle was voted in December, 2001 The project started in September, 2002 The school was created in September, 2003 The first students welcomed in January, 2004

6 A PARTNERSHIP UPSTREAM The project was created by associating all the concerned partners: –ONG Networks of reception of the public –Professionals of the training –Institutional partners and government services –Economic world Which participated in a wide dialogue aiming at defining what should be the School so that it adapts itself to its environment.

7 WHO ARE THE STUDENTS ? 18 to 30 years old, 22 on average Without diploma 30 % have linguistic problems 2/3 have a professional experience 40 % of men and 60 % of women 85 % french nationality and 70 % come from foreign countries (2d or 3d generation) Important social difficulties (psychological, housing, etc.)

8 HOW IS BUILT THE COURSE OF TRAINING ? (1) Build a professional project : –Meeting with professionals –Visit of production sites –Workshops of discovery of professional practices –Labour Law and knowledge of companies –Trainings in alternation in company (40 to 50 % of the time of the training)

9 HOW IS BUILT THE COURSE OF TRAINING ? (2) THE FUNDAMENTAL LEARNINGS –Elaborate an individualized and cooperative training plan to reach the required level in the basic knowledge (French, mathematics, communication, English, ITC,…) –Estimate the levels at the beginning and insure a continuous control to measure the progress –Individualize the learnings

10 HOW IS BUILT THE COURSE OF TRAINING ? (3) THE SOCIAL LEARNINGS –Sports activities –Activities of expression (theatre, singing, dance, poetry, etc.) –Cultural activities (plastic arts, visit of theatres, museums, etc.) –Knowledge of the social environment –

11 HOW IS BUILT THE COURSE OF TRAINING ? (4) The Ariane's thread –An individualized, personalized, tight and permanent follow-up in the form of coaching –A follow-up which continues after the schooling –The ( re) construction of reliable relations with the adults –The guarantor of the progress of every student

12 THE PEDAGOGY The principles of the education –The work can be a place of development and personal fulfilment –Everyone can change, at any time –The change can come only from the very person

13 Les résultats 230 students since january failed during the firsts weeks 208 studyed the training 100 are in training today 108 are left the school 80 are working or continue in qualifiant training (74 %)
