What is Population Distribution? Population Distribution: The pattern of population in a country, continent or the world. o Only 30% of Earth is made up of land o Much of that land is inhospitable; mountain peaks, deserts, frozen tundra o Europe and Asia most densely populated

What factors determine Population Distribution?  Availability of natural resources: oil, farmable land, and water

What factors determine Population Distribution?  Climate: hot or cold and wet or dry

What factors determine Population Distribution?  Economic development (job opportunities)

What factors determine Population Distribution?  Government policies: freedom and stability (Most people like living in areas with freedom and safety)

Discussion Question: Would you like to live in an area with high crime and no jobs?

What factors determine Population Distribution?  Rural and urban settlement patterns (Many people move to urban cities for better job opportunities) Urban: An area with a lot of industry; cities. Rural: An area without a lot of industry; countryside. Industrialization: The process of becoming a country with more industry.

What factors determine Population Distribution?  Capital resources: (transportation -roads, airports, trains and technology) Capital Resource: Tools, machines, and factories used to produce goods.

What factors determine Population Distribution?  Conflicts: many refugees relocate looking for stability and escape from persecution. Refugee: a person who flees to another country to escape persecution or disaster.

What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Birth and death rates (factoring in war, disease, and migration). Birth rate: the number of births per year for every 1,000 people. Death rate: the number of deaths per year for every 1,000 people.

What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Male/female distribution: number of a specific sex in a population.

What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Life expectancy: the average number of years a person can expect to live based on standards of living.

What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Infant mortality (death) rate: the number of babies that die under one year old per 1,000 births.

What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Urban (city) and Rural (country) distribution.  Language  Religion  Education

What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Gross Domestic Product (GDP): the value of goods and services created within a country in a year.  United States: $ 16,720,000,000,000 (Rank #1)

What factors influence population growth rates of regions?  Modern medicine and hygiene  Education  Industrialization and urbanization  Economic development  Government policy  Role of women in society
