Thursday February Drill: Name 3 things you need to do when answering a DBQ HW: Review Sheet- Unit Test Feb 11 Obj: analyze primary and secondary sources in order to complete a document based question demonstrating knowledge of water scarcity and conflict.

Political Scientists argue that the next global or regional conflict may occur over access to fresh water. Do you agree or disagree? Use the documents to support your answer.  *Be sure to include support from ALL the documents. (not the background essay)  * Remember to follow rules for writing standards; grammar and spelling, indenting, clear voice, supporting details

Document A

Document B  Water will likely play an important role in the reconfiguration of the future security environment. The UN estimates that by 2050, "at worst 7 billion people in sixty countries will be water-scarce, at best 2 billion people in forty-eight countries". Water scarcity, combined with shortages of food and medicine in underdeveloped and developing countries can severely threaten human security. “  - The United Nations

Document C  The Map above shows the location of major dams in the Middle East Region. They include Ataturk Dam, Al-Tabqa Dam and Haditha Dam. All three dams are located on the Euphrates River. This river travels through Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Kuwait.

Document D  “ Rebel forces are targeting water installations to cut off supplies to the largely Shia south of Iraq...It is already being used as an instrument of war by all sides. One could claim that controlling water resources in Iraq is even more important than controlling the oil refineries, especially in summer. Control of the water supply is fundamentally important. Cut it off and you create great sanitation and health crises,”  -Matthew Machowski, a Middle East security researcher at the UK houses of parliament and Queen Mary University of London.

Document E The above graph shows the change in available fresh water between A country is considered t o be water scarce if they have less than 1000 cubic meters per capita.
