Maman Beach Green Resort Reasons ◦ Constructive Waves ◦ Swash is stronger than the backwash ◦ Around 10 waves per minute ( calm ) ◦ Seawalls more easier to work on to be green compared to Noordin Beach

Reasons Why not Noordin Beach? ◦ The view at the beach itself is marred by fences. ◦ Mosquitoes can be a nuisance due to nearby mangroves.

Engineering methods (present) Maman Beach Stilts and seawalls built to slow down the incoming waves. Swash can caused problems. Corration happen when rocks are break by materials washed up on the shore by the waves.

Engineering methods (present) Solution when soluble minerals in coastal rocks are being dissolved in the water. Hydraulic action when water surges into cracks, joints and compress the air inside which exerts pressure on the lines of weakness. When water retreats, there is a release of pressure as trapped air expands and causes the rock to break down.

Engineering Methods (proposed) Need for change ◦ Seawalls can cause the beach to move landwards naturally because the swash will keep moving the sand up however the seawall will block the sand from going seawards, thus the end result would be no beach No beach not suitable for a resort as beach is essential for leisure.

Engineering methods (proposed) Groynes ◦ Can successfully break the current and also maintain the beach Plants to be grown on the groynes to maintain good scenery and the green theme. E.g bougainvillea. Hard and soft engineering methods to solve the problem.

Features Restaurants: There would be restaurants selling fresh seafood and local delights to the customers. The seafood can be caught from the shores of Pulau Ubin. If there is not enough, then seafood can also be gotten from Singapore.

Features Kayaking: There would be kayaks on rent for the guests to use. The guests would then be able to kayak round Pulau Ubin. If they request, the staff could also accompany them on the trip in case they get lost or any accident happens.

Features A litter picking competition: A competition held every two days Morning 15 minutes Participants would be provided with a trash bag and they would pick the most rubbish they could from the beach. The participants with the most rubbish collected (in terms of weight) would get a prize.

Features In this way the beach could be kept clean regardless of any activities the tourists do at the beach. Do not need extra man power to clean the beach The winner would be awarded with a voucher at the restaurant

Features Garden park: There would be a park in the resort that is filled with many fragrant flowers for the guests to admire. Many plants on Pulau Ubin are inaccessible to the guests, thus having a garden park would allow them to go closer to nature without any risk.

Green Building Satisfies the need and desire for more energy efficient and environmentally friendly construction practices. Try to make use of sustainable renewable sources for the building to minimize use of un-renewable sources that is not beneficial to the environment.

Green building (materials) Building materials to be plant materials and lumber from forests. Example: the floor can be made from bamboo as it grows quickly and it is renewable and gives a rustic feeling. Designs in the room and furniture can be made from clay since clay is non-toxic, reusable, renewable.

Green building (water) Water that are used before for activities such as laundry and washing hands can be a waste of water so thus these water can be used for non-potable purposes such as flushing toilets. Toilets can also been installed with half flush so that not so much water would be wasted.

Green building (energy) Glass walls to be put in facilities like restaurant. It allows the light to pass through and thus there is no need to turn on the lights in the day (save energy). Light bulbs to be made from transparent glass and not translucent ones, as the same amount of energy is used but the light can be brighter and more efficient. (energy saving bulbs)

Green building (energy) Solar panels to be built on top of the building. Solar energy is converted into electrical energy so that non-renewable resources can be saved and the energy from the sun can be stored for electricity like fans and light. Biomass can be used. Waste and Residue of unwanted trees and leaves can be burnt to produce energy which can be used for the resort.

Solar Energy Sanyo Electric would be used as it is the most efficient as seen from the table. Efficiency is derived from the output per square foot surface area of most 200 W model solar panels.

Green building (energy) The building is cited towards the sea so that the sea breeze from the sea is toward the windows in the resort. Thus, tourists wont find a need to switch on their fans so often and energy can be saved. If needed, air con would be run by the energy converted from the solar panels.

Transport system Bicycles and Trishaw Bicycles ◦ For those that want to cycle and know how to cycle in the trail to relax themselves Trishaw ◦ For those that cannot cycle They are used to reduce carbon footprints. Cars emit carbon monoxide that are greenhouse gases that traps heat from the sun. Reducing it would help to reduce the emission of green house gases.

Transport System Vans (present) However, vans are only allowed for tour groups of 10 people or more and distance of more than 2km. 25 dollars for one ride. Discourage tourists from taking vans, if want to take van take long distance. Discourage over-reliance on vans for just a short distance.

Transport System Vans are also fueled by CNG gas. CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is a fossil substitute for petrol It is a more environmentally clean alternative to those fuels Doesn’t increase the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere

Maintaining the ubin environment Prevent the tourists from littering Using of posters and regular patrol Using of trail routes and fences. Prevent the tourists from going into the reserves. Maintain the ecosystem and not disturb it.

Maintaining the ubin environment Putting more dustbins along the route so that they can throw their rubbish onto the dustbins. Not disturb the ecosystem as litter can decoy and affect the animals and plants life. Do not replace the old buildings so as to preserve the rustic and historical nature of Pulau Ubin
