A public school offering special instruction and programs not available elsewhere. Magnet schools are designed to attract a more diverse student body from throughout a school district. Like a charter school, a magnet school school has a focus or niche to offer to students (Sugar Hill has Talent and Career Awareness). Unlike a charter school, a magnet school can offer a competitive application process because magnet schools do not receive additional funding with state-mandated restrictions.

The Vision: To implement a school-wide enrichment model to promote talent development and career awareness. Specifically, we hope to focus on student strengths and interests but tie them to careers.

 Hall County Goal: All 6 th graders will develop a ten year plan  Casting of self-vision  Many of our students are bilingual  Paul Torrance - Variables for beating the odds  compelling future vision for their lives  significant adults in their lives

 Level 1: Exposure (Parallel Curriculum Model) –  Level 2: Cluster Groups  Level 3: Service Learning

 Goal is EXPOSURE  General exploratory activities  Infuse interest areas into our regular instruction  Exposure to different fields of study  What do practicing professionals in specific fields do?  We also talk about SOFT SKILLS as a school wide effort on the morning announcements  Being on time, work ethic  Saying thank you, accepting responsiblity

 Grade 1 - Agriculture, Food, Natural Resources, Law, Public Safety, Transportation  Grade 2 - Arts, AV/Technology, Health Science, Communications  Grade 3: Energy, Hospitality, Tourism, Human Services, Hospitality, Tourism  Grade 4 – Architecture, Construction, Business Management, Manufacturing, Science, Technology, Engineering–  Grade 5: Finance, Government, Information Technology, Marketing

 Kindergarten Example  List of 15 – doctor, nurse, police man  Informational Writing  Choose one word to describe  Write a book “The policeman is brave.”  5 th Grade Example – Informational Writing – choosing a career, researching, interviewing, pay rates, education needed, etc…..

 Level 1: Exposure K-5  Community partners serve as mentors and role models  Speakers from various disciplines  Interesting field trips to build background knowledge ▪ State Capitol, Lego Land ▪ Circus, Atlanta Aquarium

 Level 1: Exposure K-5  STEM Enrichment during the day with K. Chapman  STEM activities in all grades with a focus on 1 st and 5 th  Career Day

 Cluster groups by interest  Goal: To stimulate new interests that might lead to more intensive follow up.  Goal: To develop general skills in creative thinking and problem solving  Bring in professionals

 Level 2: Clusters  AM Opportunities 3 rd -5 th ▪ Engineering Club, Knitting Club, Sweet Notes Choir, Art Club, Reader’s Theater, Fitness Kids, Technology Fair  PM Opportunities 3 rd -5 th ▪ Junior Master Gardener, Reading Bowl, Wellness Kids, Computer Coding, Simple Mechanics, STEM Kids, Running Club (train for 5K)  Expand clusters to other grades – Add more fields of study

 Individual and small group investigation of real world problems  Apprenticeship  The student is thinking, feeling, and acting like a practicing professional.  All parents are required to volunteer 5 hours within the school each school year (documentation sheet will be provided)

 We are becoming a magnet school to provide opportunities and engagement  Motivation Research:  Enjoying your environment  Feeling that you are a part of something greater  Story and photo of peer tutor

 If you live in the Sugar Hill district, your children are automatically part of the magnet program.  If you DO NOT live in the Sugar Hill District, then you will need to complete an application. Applications can be found at shes.hallco.org  Applications are due back to Beth Skarda (principal) by May 22 nd. Parents will be notified by June 10 th regarding acceptance.  HB251 – GA Law for Public School Choice available after the June 10 th period (July 1 st deadline?)
