Fractions and Decimals

Jeremy and Susan each ordered a pizza. Jeremy ate half of his pizza and Susan ate half of her pizza. Did they eat the same amount of pizza? Explain. Half of The Pizza

More than ½ or less than ½ ?

A fraction is part of a whole.  Think of different ‘whole’ objects that can be broken into equal parts. Be creative!

Sequence fractions  Draw a picture of your object. Shade or circle a fraction of your object. Label a fraction.  Sequence fractions at your table (more than ½ and less than ½)  Can you arrange your fractions in a more precise way? End day 1

 Place your fraction on the number line. (more than ½ or less than ½)  Can we arrange the fractions in a more precise way? Sequence fractions

Use this fraction tool to sort fractions.  Detail.aspx?ID=80 Detail.aspx?ID=80 Detail.aspx?ID=80

More than ½ or Less than ½?  For each situation, decide whether the best estimate is more or less than one-half. Be prepared to explain your thinking. When pitching, Joe struck out 7 of 17 batters. Sally made 8 baskets out of 11 free throws. Bill made 5 field goals out of 9 attempts. Maria couldn’t collect money at 4 of the 35 homes on her paper route. Diane made 8 hits in 15 times at bat.

Complete practice 19.1 End day 2

Building Rectangles  Materials: color tiles, about 10 of each color (red, yellow, green, blue),  Create the following rectangle: ½ red, ¼ yellow and ¼ green.  Build at least one other rectangle that also works.

Building rectangles  Use the tiles to build each of the rectangles below. Build and record each in at least two ways:  1/6 red, 1/6 green, 1/3 blue, 1/3 yellow  1/3 green, 2/3 blue
