Spring 2013 Ms. T. D. James-Moss, Instructor

 Three Parts: -Introduction Sentence -Body Sentence -Conclusion Sentence

 I love summer. I enjoy summer because there is no school and I can stay up late. If I didn’t have summer, I don’t think I would enjoy school very much.

 Four Parts: -Topic Sentence -Explanation/Support -Support (Specific Example) -Transition (If then… Because of…)

 I love summer. I have always loved summer because there is no school and I get to stay up late. For example, last summer my parents took me to a water park and got me a season pass. If I could do that every summer, I would love that.

 The 8-sentence paragraph asks the writer for more mature development.  It requires the topic sentence, explanation, examples and a transition.  There must be more than one explanation and example.

 Topic Sentence  Supporting Explanation  Example  Supporting Explanation  Example  Transition

 I love summer. I have always loved summer because there is no school and I get to stay up late. For example, last summer my parents took me to a water park and got me a season pass. I enjoyed swimming in the pool, going down the slide and staying up at the hotel. I also love summer because I get to travel with my friends. One summer, my parents took me and two friends to Walt Disney World. We rode roller coasters all day and ate all kinds of food. Because I get to enjoy so many things, summer is always a blast.

 The “Because of” transition says “because these things happened, my topic sentence is true.” OR  The “Because of” transition says “Because these things happened, my thesis is true.”

 I love summer. I enjoy summer because there is no school. There is no homework, and there is no stress over school work. In addition, I don’t have to wake up early in the morning to go to school. I also enjoy summer because I get to go on vacation. I can go farther from home on the weekends, and I can explore the world during that time. Because there is no school and I get vacation time, every day is like a holiday.

 A supporting detail is just an explanation of the previous point. It does NOT require actual source information.  It may just be an opinion.  A concrete example is either a fact from research OR an actual experience that has happened to many of us.  Concrete examples are considered REAL THINGS that PROVE why ideas are valid.

Whitney Houston was one of the greatest African American singers of the 21 st Century. One reason is that she recorded music that appealed to people everywhere. For example, when Houston released “My Love Is Your Love,” the lyrics easily communicated the need for togetherness older listeners loved while the soundtrack drew in young lovers of R&B. Topic Sentence Supporting Detail Concrete Example

 Topic Sentence.  One reason why….  For example, ….  Also, ….  Another reason why….  For example, ….  In addition….  Because of..., …

 Freedom is important because it gives a person the right to be who he wants to be as a citizen of the United States. One reason why people should have freedom is that each citizen must be able to make his own decisions. For example, when US citizens vote, each man must be able to choose who he wants in position. Also, when a person gets ready to go to school, he must be able to decide where he wants to go and what he wants to learn.
