Food Container Ceramic project

Food Container  The objective is to design a container out of clay that looks like some type of food item.  This might be a piece of pie, a hamburger, a bowl of ice cream, an apple, Etc.

Sculpture method  The clay can be constructed from a block of clay  The clay is formed into the desired shape and then carefully the lid can be cut with a wire tool  The piece is then hollowed out with a loop tool

Slab construction: Rolling the pieces of clay  The clay is first rolled out flat. Use a bottle or round container to help if you don’t have a rolling pin.  Plan the shapes you will need: bottom, top, sides.  The container must have a cover that will look like the top of the food item.

Joining the pieces  Remember to score the edges (cross hatch) with a needle or toothpick where the pieces of clay will be connected. Attach the pieces of clay together by using slip (watery clay mixture).  Press the two pieces of clay together to make sure they are well joined and not likely to break apart in the kiln.

Step 1. flatten clay with hand2.Roll clay 3. Cut clay pieces 4. Score edges, use slip as glue

Dry clay is Fired  The piece is left to air-dry approx. five days. The container is very fragile at this point!  The piece is Bisque fired. The piece is then glazed and then glaze fired a second time. The piece can also be painted with acrylic paint
