Certificate IV Project The Programmers -Library Statistics Database and Application

Alex Phipps

What I thought of Project Great experience in planning a project, not just computing. Learning to interact with other disciplines, eg. Multimedia, and conveying technical ideas in a non-technical way.

What I thought of Project Working with other people in the team and outside of it. Being responsible for your work and deadlines. Using the many different programs available for planning and design.

What I would do differently Choose a smaller project I would have liked to have been able to finish the project. It would have given me a greater sense of accomplishment.

Robert Kingston

What I thought of Project I learnt HEAPS. Gained Experience in working as part of a group. Gained Experience using subcontractors and briefing them so we could get the desired results.

What I thought of Project We had a real client, which was great for real world sort of experience. Gained skills interviewing clients to work out what they want. Project work is BORING, but it can be rather useful.

What I would do differently I’d defiantly start the GANTT chart earlier. Probably chose a slightly bigger team, so I could get experience in team meetings and such. I’d allow more time in the project plan for everything to account for delays.

Hints for the next Mob of programmers doing Project

Hints for future classes Choose a small project but one that still has scope to interact with other disciplines. –AP Don’t expect to come into the class and start programming in the first few weeks -RK

Hints for future classes Be prepared to send ¾ of the time on documentation and ¼ on the project. - AP Most of this documentation relates to Project management, not coding. -RK

Hints for future classes Have more than two people in the group but not too many. –AP Get your GANTT chart up and running as soon as possible. It helps with the rest of the project. –RK Keep notes of what the group and the individual members do in every class and keep them up to date. It proves what you’ve been doing, and haven’t been slacking off. – AP & RK

Hints for future classes Allow more time for a task than it will actually take. –RK Keep version control very rigid –AP Swap contact details, so if someone can’t turn up for class, they can let the others know. –RK Back up everything –AP

In Conclusion Big THANKYOU to: Andy Henry Rick Chris and multimedia students Cindy
