Slide 2 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma CIM Definition Systems which enable the integrated, rationalized, design, development, implementation, operation and improvement of production facilities and their output over the life cycle of the product. These systems identify and use appropriate technology to achieve their goals at minimum cost and effort.

Slide 3 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma The Need For CIM New Manufacturing possibilities have been created by rapid technological progress in electronics and telecommunications. In manufacturing processes involving humans errors result in defect. Consumer want more choice but less quantity. Trade-off between economics of scale and economics of scope.

Slide 4 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma Background Technology (R.U. Ayres, 1992) – Enabling technology – Transition Technologies – Central Technologies Organization – Personnel at all levels

Slide 5 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma Implementing CIM Strategy for CIM, based on organization and concept Organization for CIM Collaboration with partners

Slide 6 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma CIM Strategies Top-down approach Bottom-up approach CAM strategy PP&C strategy CAD/CAM strategy CIM strategy

Slide 7 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma CIM Strategies (Cont.) So Which one to use??? – No universal formula – Depends on the organization or different departments – Depends on the priorities of the particular case – Can start anywhere in the system – the data warehouse (scheduler) – Other??

Slide 8 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma CIM Strategies (Cont.) Implementation Components – Planning – Acquisition – Testing – Training – Installation – Security and control – Maintenance – Documentation – Evaluation

Slide 9 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma Problems when Implementing CIM Management fail to understand Worker does not involved Non-strategic approach Wrong emphasis Others??

Slide 10 CIM Implementation Strategies Sheng Ma Conclusion CIM is beneficial Implementing CIM requires organizational and technical understanding and approach People are very important For different organization, or organization with different priority of goals, implementing CIM could be different. Requires all-level involvement Long-term effort Others aspects
