Creating Long-term Change with Technology Professional Development Moving from Interesting to Replicable

Where Are We? o We have skills o We have reflected on these skills o We have created projects o We have some comfort doing something in particular

What’s Next? o If I Won the Lottery... o How replicable is my work by someone other than me? o Why or why not?

Understanding the Context o Why doesn’t everyone just do this? o It is, and isn’t, about things you already know o What you know: o Time o Money/Resources o Others?

o What else? o It’s about change o Where are people in the continuum of concerns?

CBAM o Concerns Based Adoption Model o Rogers, 1971 o Foundation for much of the research on how teachers adopt educational innovations/interventions o Levels of Concern o Adopter Types

Levels of Concern o Awareness -- I am not concerned o Informational -- I want to know more o Personal -- How will this affect me? o Management -- One more thing!?? o Consequence -- How is this impacting kids? o Collaboration -- How does this relate to other staff? o Refocusing -- I know how to make this better...

Adopter Types Rogers, 1971

ACOT Model

Bringing It All Together o You are where you are because of who you are o Others in your school will not respond to exactly the same stimuli and incentives that you have o Considering where others are now, what can you do to move them along?

What We Know o Understand social networks o Talk, Talk, Talk o People respond to the network... o but maybe not to you directly! o Utilize strategies that build confidence and comfort o Mentoring o Modeling o Close support

o Combine support and pressure o Support = peer and bottom-up o Pressure = top down administrative requirements o You cannot succeed with a totally bottom-up approach o You need administrative support o How can you garner this support? o Who influences the administrators? o They have “concerns” and “adopter types” as well!

Reasonable Expectations o You will not have 100% adoption o Remember the 17% resister population o Most people move through all levels of concern o This takes time o 3 -5 years on the average

o But You Need a Plan!

So, What’s the Plan? o Creating an action plan for technology professional development o Do you have a plan for replicating and expanding what you’ve done this year?
