Electronic Safety How to navigate today’s Cyber World

Talk with your teens about what they do online.

It is better to teach them responsibility, so when on their own they know what to do. Some of you have high school seniors, teaching them to be safe will work better when they are in a college dorm room this time next year.

Be careful what you or your child post on Facebook and who you make friends

Remind your kids that once an image is sent, it can NEVER be retrieved -- and they will lose control of it. Sexting is against the law.

Be careful who you give your number to… GPS & Pictures

Story on MSNBC, link on handout. Texting while driving?

Don’t respond. Don’t retaliate. Save the evidence. Talk to a trusted adult. Block the bully. Be civil. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Cyber bullying

Gaming is a favorite past time for many. Be sure you are safe here as well

Avoid in-person meetings.

Safe Meeting?

The internet is not going any where.

British social critic, Stephen Fry, who likens the Internet to a city, and therefore migration to the internet as akin to urbanization. “ The internet is a city and, like any great city, it has monumental libraries and theatres and museums and places in which you can learn and pick up information and there are facilities for you that are astounding - specialized museums, not just general ones. But there are also slums and there are red light districts and there are really sleazy areas where you wouldn't want your children wandering alone. And I think people must understand that about the internet - it is a new city, it's a virtual city and there will be parts of it of course that they dislike, but you don't pull down London because it's got a red light district. ” (Fry, 2009)
