LIGO-G Z 5 LSC Council meeting Report on search for new LIGO Director Jim Hough reported on the good progress made by the LSC’s Search Committee. They plan to give a short list of names to the LIGO Oversight Committee by the end of August. Emlyn Hughes (chair of LIGO O.C.) described plan to choose one (or at most two) final candidates by time of NSF Review in November. S5 sensitivity discussion Stan Whitcomb asked the Council to comment on whether the 10 Mpc range goal for S5 (for the 4k ifos) gave the right science for the “one year run at design sensitivity.” There was a very strong consensus that this is correct. We want to run. Improvements in sensitivity during brief commissioning breaks would be welcome, of course.

LIGO-G Z 6 LSC Council meeting Membership applications »University of Texas at Austin (Matzner) »University of Sannio at Benevento (Pinto) »University of Maryland (Buonanno) »Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Gretarsson) All four applications for membership were approved. Welcome to our new members!

LIGO-G Z 7 LSC Council meeting Approval of new LSC Charter David Shoemaker and Norna Robertson presented the draft new LSC Charter, revised based on discussions at the March 2005 LSC meeting and circulated before the meeting. A paragraph was added about procedures for adoption and revision of the Charter and Bylaws. There was also clarification of language on the role of the LSC Executive Committee. With these minor changes made, a vote was taken. The Charter was approved by well over the required 2/3 majority.

LIGO-G Z 8 LSC Council meeting Discussion and approval of new structure for LSC Executive Committee David Shoemaker and Norna Robertson presented the incomplete draft of the new LSC Bylaws. This document describes details of the structure of the LSC. Discussion was focused on the proposed new structure of the LSC Executive Committee. In addition to the LIGO Directorate, there are four appointed members (Operations Chair, DetChar Chair, Analysis Chair, and Advanced Detector Chair) and four “at large” members elected by the LSC Council. Although the document is incomplete, the Council agreed to vote on the adoption of this new structure of the Executive Committee. The new structure was adopted by a large majority.

LIGO-G Z 9 Additional business Publication Policy revisions were not able to be discussed. We will attempt to organize a vote via soon. International REU (Mueller)
