IEEE Standard : The Revised PQ MonitoringStandard Randy Collins Chair, 1159 Working Group IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting New York January 28, 2002

Benchmark Document Monitoring of Electric Power Quality of single and polyphase systems. Descriptions of phenomena. Definitions of nominal and deviations from nominal. Recommendations for measurement techniques, application techniques, and interpretation of monitoring results.

Purpose The purpose of is to direct user in the proper monitoring and data interpretation of electromagnetic phenomena that cause power quality problems.

Purpose cont’d Defines power quality phenomena to facilitate communication within the power quality community. Forms the consensus opinion for safe and acceptable methods for monitoring and interpreting results. Tutorial on power system disturbances and common causes.

The next 1159… At a minimum, 1159 needs to be updated and include links to the forthcoming and.3 works. What do we want the final product to look like?

Some ideas… Ch. 1. Overview Expand and include information about “why would you want to measure for power quality?” Ch. 2. References Revise and update

Ch. 3 Definitions Terms used in this recommended practice Avoided terms Abbreviations and acronyms Expand with the former P1433 information Pull definitions from.1 and.3 documents Can we use and define terms not used in the document? Would this be difficult to ballot?

Ch. 4 Power Quality Phenomena Electromagnetic compatibility General classification of phenomena Detailed descriptions of phenomena Table 2 is probably the most widely used part of the Standard. Update the graphs. Expand the explanations.

Ch. 5 Monitoring Objectives Need for monitoring PQ Equipment tolerances and effects of disturbances on equipment Equipment types Effect on equipment by phenomena type

Ch. 6 Measurement instruments AC voltage and current measurements Voltage and current considerations Monitoring instruments Instrument power Revise and update. Incorporate some information.

Ch. 7 Application techniques Safety Monitoring location Equipment connection Monitoring thresholds Monitoring period

Ch. 8 Interpreting monitoring results Interpreting data summaries Critical data extraction Interpreting critical events Verifying data interpretation Expand this to include data reduction and presentation info. How do you present multi-dimensional info on a 2- dimensional CBEMA/ITIC/SEMI curve?

Additional topics Sort of a “case study” section, except organize it by equipment categories. What to monitor and look for, what you don’t need to monitor for when investigating problems with common equipment: ASDs, PLCs, Switching power supplies, relays/contactors, lighting, etc.

Annexes Annex A: Calibration and self testing (informative) Keep this or not? Annex B: Bibliography (informative) Keep this and update/expand. New Annexes: Technical summaries of the.1 and.3 documents.

Today’s objectives Establish scope, purpose and other items required for the PAR. Determine a working outline and chapters Assign chapter chairs

Proposed Organization Ch. 1 and 2 Intro material Ch. 3 Def’ns Ch. 4 Phenomena Ch. 5 Objectives Ch. 6 Instruments Ch. 7 Applications Ch. 8 Interpretation and Statistical Analysis Ch. 9 Examples of using the standard in the field Annexes: A: Calib. and Self- Testing B: Tech Summaries of and C: Bibliography
