Ephesians: God’s New Family Series Lesson 26, September 20, 2015

From this point on, Paul will bring home in a variety of practical ways, the truths which he has already set forth, both by instruction and prayer, in Ephesians 1-3.

 God brought us from being an alienated humanity to being a reconciled humanity.

 God brought us from a fractured humanity to a unified humanity.

In these two ideas, we find a foretaste of the glories to come; it is an outpost of heaven right here in our world.

Ephesians 4:1-3 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation wherewith you are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(1) To live out our calling as Christians.

(1)To live out our calling as Christians. (2) To love the family of God. (3) To keep peace in this family.

I.Let’s Live Up to Our Calling (4:1)

Unity and holiness are prerequisites to walking worthy of our calling.

I.Let’s Live Up to Our Calling (4:1) Unity and holiness are prerequisites to walking worthy of our calling. We are to be who we are.

I.Let’s Live Up to Our Calling (4:1) Unity and holiness are prerequisites to walking worthy of our calling. We are to be who we are. The power of the truth and gospel that we proclaim are denuded by our lives if we do not walk worthy of our calling.

I.Let’s Live Up to Our Calling (4:1) Unity and holiness are prerequisites to walking worthy of our calling. We are to be who we are. The power of the truth and gospel that we proclaim are denuded by our lives if we do not walk worthy of our calling. Nominal Christianity is not prepared to face the forces of satanic powers and principalities, nor the encroaching pagan culture around us.

I.Let’s Live Up to Our Calling (4:1) The power of the truth and gospel that we proclaim are denuded by our lives if we do not walk worthy of our calling. Nominal Christianity is not prepared to face the forces of satanic powers and principalities, nor the encroaching pagan culture around us. Our Christianity must be professed with the mouth, believed in the heart, and lived in our daily lives.

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2)

Paul is especially concerned that our living as Christians will be manifested in this reconciled and unified family through love.

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2) Absolute Necessities for Manifesting Genuine Christian Love:

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2) Absolute Necessities for Manifesting Genuine Christian Love: H UMILITY

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2) Absolute Necessities for Manifesting Genuine Christian Love: H UMILITY ~ If we’re going to manifest a world-changing love in our church, it has got to start with self-effacement, an attack on pride, the mortification of the flesh, and the cultivation of genuine, Christ-like humility.

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2) Absolute Necessities for Manifesting Genuine Christian Love: G ENTLENESS

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2) Absolute Necessities for Manifesting Genuine Christian Love: G ENTLENESS ~ We can’t love one another like we ought to until we’re prepared to stop demanding our own way, or rights, and submit to what will be best for the whole family.

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2) Absolute Necessities for Manifesting Genuine Christian Love: P ATIENCE

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2) Absolute Necessities for Manifesting Genuine Christian Love: P ATIENCE ~ Until we’re ready to show some patience in our families and forbearance in our congregation, we will not show genuine love.

II.We Are to Love One Another (4:2) Absolute Necessities for Manifesting Genuine Christian Love: T OLERANCE ~ meaning mutual compliance and respect. You can’t live together without some sort of joint acceptance that makes space for one another, that’s willing to give and take, and not always ready to criticize every little thing.
