PORE An opening through which oil reaches the surface of the skin.

HAIR Any of the fine threadlike strands growing from the skin of humans and mammals.

SWEAT GLAND An opening through which sweat reaches the surface of the skin.

HAIR FOLLICLE A place in the skin where hair grows.

MELANIN A pigment (kind of like a dye) that gives the skin color.

MUSCLE Part of the body that makes the body move.

LIGAMENT Part of the body that looks like a strong rubber band. It holds bones together in the joints that move- like the knee, elbow and wrist.

TENDON Part of the body that looks like a strong rubber band and holds the muscle to the bone.

CARTILAGE Part of the body that protects the ends of the bones and keeps them from rubbing together. It is softer than bone. The upper part of your ear is cartilage also.

CONNECTIVE TISSUE Different parts of the body that provide support for the body and connect the different organs. Some types of connective tissue are cartilage, tendon and ligaments.

JOINT A place in the body where two bones come together.

ORGAN Parts of the body that each have a special job. Organs all work together to keep the body healthy.

PROTECT To keep from harm or injury. The ribcage keeps the organs from injury. Like the cage in an race car keeps the driver safer. The skin covers the muscles and organs and keeps them from harm. Kind of like the cell phone cover keeps the phone from getting scratched and broken. To keep from harm or injury. The ribcage keeps the organs from injury.
