An object of a preposition is the noun, pronoun, verbal or clause following a preposition in a prepositional phrase.

Preposition + Noun, pronoun, gerund, or clause The arrows point to the objects of the preposition. Examples: In time, from Gary, at school. In, from and at are the prepositions. Time, Gary and school are the objects of the preposition. Here is the pattern for a simple prepositional phrase.

Preposition + modifiers + noun, pronoun, etc. Object of the Prepositions In the weedy, overgrown pasture More elaborate prepositional phrases include modifiers such as adjectives and adverbs. In is the preposition. The, weedy and overgrown are the modifiers. Pasture is the object of the preposition. For Example:

Early in the morning before school, Jan and Joey went inside the scary abandoned house.
