Daniel Watson4 Farming of the CowFarming of the Cow

Daniel Watson5 Farming the Cow The cows start out in a big Pasteur when they are young. When the cows get older they get moved into a feed lot. In the feed lot the cows can't move around much, and mostly just eat. Hence the 'feed' lot. A 450 pound calf just moved into the feed lot will mostly eat hay. It will start eating more and more until it is full grown weighing up to 1200 pounds. Older cows eat more grains like oats.

Daniel Watson6 Slaughtering of the CowSlaughtering of the Cow

7 Killing the Cow After the cow is taken to the slaughter house in the truck, it is hit with a 'captive bolt' stun gun, on the head. It knocks the cow out, so that its throat can be cut. The cow is still alive, so the heart pumps most of the blood out. After draining the blood from the cow, the head is then removed. The fore-legs are all removed, then it is skinned. The Trachea, lungs and heart are removed. The body is then cut down the middle, for easier handling. It is washed, and cut down the middle, then into nine other pieces.

Daniel Watson8 Grocery CowGrocery Cow

9 Grocery Store Once the cow gets to your local grocery store, it is cut up into even more pieces. The little parts of the cow are then sold to you anywhere from $4.00 to $40.00 per kilogram, depending on the part of the cow you buy.
