The Curriculum

Language Arts Throughout the year students will be developing their language, reading, and writing skills.

Grammar Bi-weekly students practice grammar and sentence structure through intensive grammar worksheets.

Journal Format Each day, students develop writing skills through journal writing. Journals are also a means of student teacher communication.

Vocabulary & Reading Fluency Beginning in October students will develop complex vocabulary through a hands on word work program called “Words Their Way”. Every other week students are given in class reading fluency scripts to orally read with a partner. During this activity students work together to develop their vocabulary, pronunciation, and reading fluency.

Readers Theatre Readers Theatre is an excellent way to improve oral fluency. On every second Monday students are given a script. On Friday students will be assigned a part and present the scrip to the class. Please encourage your child to practice the script by reading out loud at home.

Reading In combination with Readers Theatre and Reading Fluency students will develop their reading skills through the use of Nelson Literacy textbooks, digitally projected book, A-Z reading texts, and other reading materials.

Writing Students will develop their writing skills through mini lessons, daily paragraph editing, writers workshops, journals, newsletter, and writing practice lessons.

Newsletters Each month, students will publish a class newsletter. The first edition will be posted online at the end of October.
